Union Pacific Steam Survivors examines the status of 52 still-extant UP steam locomotives. Most were either given to communities or museums. A few were retained by the railroad in its own corporate collection. During the 1950s, as American railroads were making the transition from steam to diesel power, Union Pacific's policy of good relations with its on-line communities was instrumental in the donation of many retired steam locomotives.

Museums, some of them off-line, were also recipients. These steam survivors, while in some instances limited to only one or two extant examples of certain types, are well diversified. They range in size from small switch engines to that of the world's largest steam locomotives - the Big Boys. What makes Union Pacific unique from other large Class I railroads which donated old locomotives is that the railroad has otherwise continued to maintain two operative steam engines.

UP 4-8-4 type No. 844 and 4-6-6-4 type No. 3985 are based at Cheyenne, Wyoming, for exhibition purposes. However, the majority of preserved UP steam will continue to be on static display in community parks and museums. These other engines, especially those at outdoor display sites, need and will continue to need regular maintenance.

Steam historian Lloyd E. Stagner relates the service history of these locomotives. Also, steam preservationist Bob Yarger comments on possible ways these machines can be saved for long-term posterity. Together, the authors provide an informative and illustrated guide on what can be done to save some of these historic relics of a past transportation age before its too late.

Union Pacific West From Leavenworth: A History of the Leavenworth, Kansas & Western Railway by I. E. Quastler This book picks up where Kansas Central Narrow Gauge leaves off in telling the history of the rail line that ran from Leavenworth to Miltonvale, Kansas.

A few years after converting from narrow gauge to standard gauge, the Union Pacific-controlled Kansas Central was purchased at a foreclosure auction for $200,000 and rechristened the Leavenworth, Kansas & Western, with plans to expand the line to the western border of Kansas and northward into Nebraska.

But financial woes dogged the line and in 1908 it was sold to the Union Pacific. Improved highway transportation and losses spurred by the Great Depression caused the UP to abandon nearly all of the LK&W line in 1935.

Photography by Forrest H. Bahm. Across the United States, a large number of new short line or regional railroads have been formed from trackage formerly operated by larger railroad companies.

One example of this type of rail service in the Midwest, the Nebraska Central, has since 1993 continued to move mostly agrarian-related traffic over a series of former Union Pacific Railroad branch lines.

This book serves as a case study of how rail service on one branch line has dramatically changed between the decades of the 1960s and the 1990s. It is also a pictorial study in black and white of how one railroad photographer, Forrest H.

Bahm, documented both of these eras. It is ultimately a story of regional railroading for today. Only one steam photograph but includes many interesting subjects including passenger specials, detour trains with main line power (including a U50C) and a Jordan Spreader.

The hardcover printing is now available again! After testing EMD's GP35-DD35-DD35-GP35 demonstrator set, Union Pacific was so pleased with the design that it almost immediately ordered an additional 25 DD35s and 22 matching GP35s, which were delivered between May and August 1964.

These joined the four-unit demonstrator set previously acquired by the carrier. As with UP's earlier experiences with cab-less booster units, the lack of flexibility of these massive, mainline-only units soon became apparent, and a planned follow-on order for 15 units was changed from booster units to 15 units with fully equipped cabs the DDA35 was born.

The Centennials were the final example of Union Pacific's search for the ideal locomotive. While the road pursued a study of its motive power needs in late 1967 and early 1968, UP in March 1968 tried, as a stopgap measure, using EMD?s SD45 model as a high-horsepower, high-speed locomotive, but with limited success.

UP returned to the concept of double-engine locomotives and in collaboration between the railroad and EMD, the DDA40X came to life. Within 13 months of an initial March 1968 communication, the railroad and the builder had worked out a definitive design, and the first unit was delivered.

The timing of the first unit coincided with the 100th anniversary of the May 10, 1869, ceremony marking the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah and the DDA40X quickly became known as the Centennial.

It was numbered 6900, and 46 more examples arrived over the next 28 months.

This book features the best of the author's photography taken on the Union Pacific and Rock Island (via trackage rights) during the diesel era in the Topeka, Kansas, vicinity from the mid-1960s through the contemporary era. It includes coverage of passenger and freight train action in the vicinity of the Union Pacific Topeka depot, which served as an active passenger station until 1971.

It is today a major rail museum known as the Great Overland Station. Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge is a collection of 54 articles by the same title that originally appeared in the bi-monthly magazine, NARROW GAUGE AND SHORT-LINE GAZETTE (also published by Benchmark Publications). It is the story of the author's H0n3 scale model railroad. He based his Union Central and Northern layout on the Clear Creek District of the 3-foot gauge Colorado & Southern Railroad that ran from Golden, Colorado, to just beyond Silver Plume.

Although this book tells the story of the author's layout, it is not a "how-to-do-it" book. Rather it is a book of inspiration and motivation - the author has an infectious enthusiasm for his modeling and his subject, thus Up Clear Creek is also a history book - modeling the C&S as it was in the late 1920s and early 1930s required a great deal of research. The history of the area is discussed in the text and reflected in the accurate modeling not only of the railroad and its equipment, but also of the houses, churches, mines, and businesses along the line.

YORKTOWN (CV-5) was laid down in 1934, launched in 1936 and commissioned in 1937. Following its shakedown cruise in 1938, YORKTOWN engaged in exercises simulating attacks on the US East Coast. Joining the Pacific Fleet in 1939, tactical exercises continued in 1940, centered on the defense of the Hawaiian islands in the North Pacific.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, YORKTOWN became the flagship of aircraft carrier Task Force 17, targeting Imperial Japanese Navy garrisons in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands in February 1942, and engaging IJN shipping in the Coral Sea in May 1942.

Returning to Pearl Harbor with severe bomb damage that would take 3 months to repair, YORKTOWN was back at sea after only 3 days, to mount an attack on the Japanese Navy in the Battle of Midway in June 1942.

YORKTOWN suffered direct hits from Japanese torpedo aircraft but did not sink. Attempts at salvage were interrupted when a final assault by IJN submarine caused YORKTOWN to eventually capsize and sink on June 7th 1942.

The 1990s was a twilight era for Cuba's fascinating old transportation system. Trains hauled by century-old American steam locomotives met Model A Fords and wooden stations as if it were the 1920s. Horse-drawn carriages passed colonial architecture in towns and cities, with ox teams doing heavier work in scenic countryside's.

Wooden Brill interurban trains still carried passengers while General Electric steeple cabs hauled freight between Havana and Matanzas, just as they did when chocolate maker Hershey bought them new in 1920. The author spent 18 months over several years documenting this transportation time-warp from one end of the island to the other.

Although Cuba has been modernizing its transportation system, most of the old American cars and locomotives seen in this book are being preserved as 'National Patrimony' and should be available for future visitors to see, photograph and (in some cases) even ride. The book is a tour of the island and includes vintage B&W photographs, Color photographs from the 1990s, postcard and other ephemera reproductions.
