From the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California in the West to the Gulf of Mexico in the East, and from the U.S. Border in the North to the Yucatan Peninsula in the South, this new title features the passenger services of Mexico.Major express trains such as the AZTEC EAGLE and connecting lines such as the Coahuila and Zacatecas narrow gauge railroad are included.

Also featured are examples of motive power including steam, diesel and electric, plus three streetcar lines. The trains were equipped with a fascinating variety of mostly hand-me-down passenger equipment that changed quite a bit over the nearly 60-year period (1961-2017) covered by these photographs.

The Western Pacific was an interesting railroad in terms of its history, operations, facilities and equipment. It earned the respect of many perhaps because of its David vs. Goliath image as it competed head to head against the vastly larger Southern Pacific or in part to its attractive orange and silver locomotives, or the California Zephyr and its run through the Feather River Canyon, or even to the lowly boxcars, many of which were adorned with a colorful feather logo.

Come along for a look at the colorful WP with outstanding photographs not only of the fabled California Zephyr equipment, but heavyweight passenger cars, general freight service cars, TOFC flats and trailers, maintenance of way equipment, and finally finishing with cabooses.

There are some really neat pictures here. Some cars are away from their home road but look like they just came out of the paint shop - maybe they did. Some small roads get multiple pages and images like the Ann Arbor and Minneapolis & St. Louis. Some small roads and private owner cars get one picture.

It's not all "Boxcar Red' as there were many colorful cars seen in the 1950s. This book begins with Ann Arbor and ends with Norfolk & Western and is arranged alphabetically. So, no PRR and Southern Pacific and many others. Maybe another volume will cover those companies. The 1950s are arguably the classic era for freight cars, pre-dating the mergers that would erase many venerable railroads and leave us with new names such as Penn Central, Seaboard Coast Line, and Erie-Lackawanna.

In the 1950s, "boxcar red" was everywhere, but colorful new paint schemes were arriving and turning heads. It was the final decade of friction bearings and roof walks, and the ultimate years of stock cars, ice-bunker refrigerator cars, and even the XM 40' boxcar! s, standard portrait size, Color images with captions.

The Southern Pacific Railroad and Santa Fe Railway were so sure their proposed merger would be approved by the Federal Government, that they went ahead and painted over 400 locomotives in the new company's paint scheme.

This book starts out with color photos of Missouri Pacific steam pulling heavyweight trains. These photos are pretty much 3/4 wedge shots with not much more than the locomotives filling the frame. Quite a few trains are in the full Eagle paint with later pages containing photographs of the solid blue paint.

Two pictures of #670, the "MotoRailer" in the Eagle paint scheme are neat. Locations from all over Missouri Pacific routes where selected for the book. Many scenes are from St.

Louis and Kansas City, but many smaller stations such as Laredo, Sedalia, Kirkwood, Corpus Christi and others appear. Motive power includes all types from Alco PAs to E-units, Geeps and switchers at the large terminals.

A couple pictures of MoPac's bulk mail boxcars, later-day Amtrak service, business cars and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois round out the book. This volume has more extensive captions than most Morning Sun books.

The post war passenger service of the Missouri Pacific is examined across its far-reaching system as well as the road it absorbed to reach the Windy City, the Chicago & Eastern Illinois.
