Conrail's Western Region was initially comprised of three former NYC divisions (Cleveland, Toledo, and Chicago) and one PRR (Fort Wayne). Follow the early efforts to maintain operation while rehabilitation was taking place and watch in the 1980s as Conrail operations began to really take off.

In 1976 Congress imposed opposing goals for Conrail to be profitable but get its freight off the Northeast Corridor. Integrating Penn Central's existing freight electric operations into its overall operating plan proved difficult as Amtrak attempted to restore high speed passenger service and rebuild the NEC.
Photographer Ralph Curcio was out on the NEC in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey creating a fabulous chronological record that tells the story of how Conrail finally removed its through freight traffic and ceased electric freight operation altogether.

The Union Pacific Company is proud of its railroad and saw the color photograph as the best way to show the world the scope and efficiency of its operation as well as the beauty of its territory served in the American West.
It was prolific in its advertising and generous in its distribution of the all-color calendars to on-line customers and stations. Likewise the calendars could be found far away and made the Armour yellow train of the Union Pacific familiar artwork adorning the offices of shippers from Philadelphia to Pensacola.

Wayne Sherman started as a brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad based out of the Washington, DC's Benning Yard in 1955 and was soon working all over the Chesapeake Region. His duties assigned him to York, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Baltimore, Maryland; and Enola Yard, Pennsylvania. Unlike most of his fellow employees, Wayne took his camera along and shares these photographs and his colorful anecdotes with us in this all-color book.
The book begins in Washington, DC and works west to Chicago.
