Straight from the Union Pacific Museum Archives, this book illustrates the very best camera work of UP company photographers. Many of these photographs have remained unseen for over 50 years. The railroads photographic staff sought unusual scenic locations for remarkable views of the earliest UP stream-liners, the oldest and newest steam locomotives and the modern look of handsome diesel and gas-turbine cabs.

The Southern Railway system was a relatively unknown carrier until the 1960s when its management style and business objectives dramatically shifted course. One of the first major railroads to dieselize, its quiet business methods were transformed into the benchmark railroad of the 1960s. The author, a former Southern employee, relates the story of this remarkable railroad through the medium of more that 200 vintage Color photographs.

This book starts out with color photos of Missouri Pacific steam pulling heavyweight trains. These photos are pretty much 3/4 wedge shots with not much more than the locomotives filling the frame. Quite a few trains are in the full Eagle paint with later pages containing photographs of the solid blue paint.

Two pictures of #670, the "MotoRailer" in the Eagle paint scheme are neat. Locations from all over Missouri Pacific routes where selected for the book. Many scenes are from St.

Louis and Kansas City, but many smaller stations such as Laredo, Sedalia, Kirkwood, Corpus Christi and others appear. Motive power includes all types from Alco PAs to E-units, Geeps and switchers at the large terminals.

A couple pictures of MoPac's bulk mail boxcars, later-day Amtrak service, business cars and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois round out the book. This volume has more extensive captions than most Morning Sun books.

The post war passenger service of the Missouri Pacific is examined across its far-reaching system as well as the road it absorbed to reach the Windy City, the Chicago & Eastern Illinois.

Lehigh Valley Volume IV explores the final two years of operation of the independent railroad corporation before its inclusion into the Conrail System Plan. Striving for image improvements, the Lehigh Valley purchased new locomotives from General Electric to maintain faster inter-modal schedules. The Lehigh Valley makes strides toward profitability with higher utilization of its power and new trains. The Alcos are still out in full force (and in many colors!).

Conrail's Northern Region was comprised of three divisions of the former Canada Southern Railway and Michigan Central Railroad routes through Canada and Michigan. These three Conrail divisions were called the Canada Division, Detroit Division and Michigan Division.
