Having spent my early childhood in Minneapolis, I appreciate the photographs of the author who, as an employee, was able to get closer to many railroad locations than I could. The Twin Cities, known in Minnesota as "The Cities" are the 4th largest railroad hub of the United States.

There are many locations from all over this huge metropolitan area the author visited and worked and brought his camera along with him. Study and savor many colorful, dramatic images of Soo Line and CP Rail operations in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis - St.

Paul and outlying terminals from 1985-2015. A former employee who worked the extra board for ten years examines many of the locomotives and most of the jobs and the routes over which the crews hauled freight, interchanged cars with other railroads and serviced customers throughout the beautiful Twin Cities and busy railroad transportation service area.

There never lived an ALCO Diesel that liked to stay tuned up, so goes the old saying. The RS-series, with its husky 244 or 251 engine idling, makes sounds befitting a fire-breathing dragon. Notched-out, it rattles and thumps, exuding dark, oily smoke as turbo blades try to catch up with combustion chambers.

Slithering through the early morning California smog, or hauling ore through the echoing rock of Utah, the sound is reminiscent of some supernatural creature. While the photographs in this Volume are grouped by the familiar marketing names of the various model lines designed and built over the years, the author has made no attempt to cover every railroad which ever owned an ALCO-though you will find most models.

Over 200 Color photographs, covering virtually every ALCO model, including more than 90 railroads.

Colorado Rail Annual No. 34 by Adrian and Art Hundhausen with material not published before. The color images will of course not be photographs, but images of ephemera. This Colorado Railroad Museum's latest Annual is the result of authors Adrian and Art Hundhausen's lifelong interest in the Colorado Midland Railroad.

Carefully researched and artistically written, this is a book that fans of the Colorado Midland won't want to miss! The road's history from 1887 to 1900 is detailed, along with the human side of the Midland narrative.

Colorful stories found in this new volume include the trials and tribulations of Midland employees, drunken Swedish miners who fell off the train, and a father chasing his runaway daughter to Leadville serve as fascinating examples.

Interesting chapters such as "Spooky Victorian Railroad Stations and Hotels", "Ride with a Mormon to Old Mexico," and "Trip with a Kodak over Hagerman Pass" compel further reading. Salient topics - such as the 1894 Cripple Creek Strike and the Pullman boycott in Colorado - are covered in much greater detail than in previous books.

A selection of timetables and advertising brochures is faithfully reproduced, showcasing the vivid color and imaginative illustrations used by CM in the 19th century. Plentiful diagrams of Pullman cars, maps of Midland trackage, and schematics of depots are included.

Southern California's Mount Lowe Railway lived up to its title, The Most Scenic Mountain Railway in the World. In its short trackage from Altadena to Alpine Tavern, its rails climbed 3,130 feet in 5.84 miles, thus constituting an engineering marvel.

This book chronicles in word and picture the building of the electric railway into Rubio Canyon, the construction of the great incline on a 62 percent grade, and the narrow gauge trolley from Echo Mountain to Alpine Tavern.

The Alpine Divisions tracks followed the natural contour of the mountainside, over 18 trestles and around 127 curves.

Huntington Tracks won the Gold Medal for the best book in the category of Transportation at the Independent Publishers Book Awards.

This is a very reasonable price for a monumental work on the early days of the Pacific Electric. The development of southern California into a great urban area went hand-in-hand with the construction and operation of the Pacific Electric.

The book talks about Collis and Henry Huntington building their empire into Southern California and focuses on the 1870s through the Great Merger of 1911. A great reference book for all railroad historians

This is the second volume, featuring a pictorial history of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Now that the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe have merged to form one railroad, there is increased interest in the story of the Santa Fe Railway. This book presents the Santa Fe's system-wide operations of its passenger and freight services.

Also featured is an account of Frederick Henry Harvey's handling of Santa Fe's hotels, eating houses, and dining cars. For over a century the Santa Fe operated many first-class transcontinental passenger trains between Chicago, the Pacific Coast, and Texas cities. The history of each train is told, along with the all-coach streamliner El Capitan, and other trains such as the Scout, El Tovar, and the Grand Canyon Limited.

Freight, the life's blood of the railroad, is brought up to date. Also covered are the signal system, the communication system, and the development of the Santa Fe emblem.

The name Santa Fe began with the early history of the Southwest, grew with the flow of commerce that followed the old Santa Fe Trail, and became a popularized term by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

For the past century this name has been associated with a famous fleet of streamlined passenger trains, and today's piggyback and container trains. This is the first of three Volumes featuring the Santa Fe System.

Volume One features the organization of the railroad back in 1866, follows its construction from Topeka to California, from Topeka to Chicago, and operation of the trains. It covers the roads venture into Mexico, development of local lines within California, tells about electrification possibilities, the Santa Fe bus system, Santa Fe's venture into air-rail transportation with participation in Transcontinental Air Transport, Santa Fe Skyways, mergers, and up to the pending merger with Burlington Northern (1995).

This Volume also presents a comprehensive review of the Santa Fe's motive power fleet from the earliest 4-4-0 type locomotives, to the giant 2-10-10-2s. The Santa Fe was an early pioneer of diesel motive power due to the alkali water across the desert lands of the Southwest.

Described are the rail motor cars, the diesel switchers, the General Purpose diesels, the GE U-boats, and the most modern Super Fleet motive power. Included are more than 476 illustrations, 27 color plates, documentary reproductions, maps, appendix, bibliography and index.

The focus of this book is on the steam locomotive classes of the Delaware & Hudson that were in common operation during the late 1930s and 1940s. During this time, the D&H went from a coal hauler to a bridge carrier where train speeds were important for connections with other railroads. By 1950, 233 steam locomotives remained on the roster, 182 in freight service, twenty-six in Passenger Service and twenty-five in switching operations.

By 1953, diesel switchers and Road-Switchers had replaced all active steam power. Under Joseph H. Nuelle, ninth president of the D&H, motive power requirements changed. Nuelle ordered from ALCO twenty Challenger 4-6-6-4 locomotives for the bridge traffic. Numbered 1500-1519, they were quickly followed by fifteen, #1520-1534, more in 1942 (page 41).

Under the Nuelle administration, the D&H also ordered fifteen modern dual service 4-8-4s for delivery in 1943 (page 10). These 4-8-4s operated between Oneonta and Rouses Point in either freight or Passenger Service. Rounding out the modern steam locomotive fleet for the D&H were five more 4-6-6-4s, #1535-1539, delivered in 1946 (page 44).

This book does not cover all classes of D&H steam power but is a sampling of the various classes. From 0-6-0 switchers to the 4-6-6-4s 18 classes and sub-classes of D&H steam power is presented.

I would guess this title is about 50/50 between older paint schemes and locomotive models than vs. newer BNSF paint and power. Also it is about a 50/50 mix where one photo fills the page and two photos per page is the layout. Photo quality is pretty good and printed on quality glossy paper.

Between 1987 and 2014 Kurt Reisweber took 5 trips to California where he captured many images of the California railroad scene. This book is a collection of those photos, supplemented with photos taken by his father, Bob Reisweber. This is by no means a comprehensive look at the Santa Fe and BNSF but provides a fascinating glimpse of this period of railroading.

Follow Santa Fe diesels in the "War Bonnet" paint scheme and BNSF locomotives as they cross the state from Barstow, to Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. From remote desert locations to more famous ones, including Cajon Pass, Tehachapi Loop and Feather River Canyon, this book provides a look at the Santa Fe and the BNSF during this transition era.

Contents:
To Barstow Across the Mojave Desert, pp. 5-36,
To Los Angeles via Sullivan's Curve, pp. 37-93,
To San Francisco via Tehachapi Loop, pp. 94-139,
To Oregon via the Feather River, pp. 140-145,
To San Diego via the Surf Line, pp. 146-148,
Samples of ATSF and BNSF Equipment, pp. 149-152.
