Passenger Trains of Denver: The Decade Before Amtrak 1960-1970 by John D. Mummert. This book provides an informative review of passenger train service to Colorado's Mile High City in the last full decade before the start of Amtrak in 1971. Synopsis histories are provided for Denver Union Station and for every passenger train from six major railroads (AT&SF, CB&Q, CRI&P, D&RGW, MP and UP) that operated into Denver during this era.

A brief overall operational history is provided for each train, plus sample equipment consists from different years-illustrating the rise and fall of some of the most famous passenger trains to operate across the western United States. Also included is a timeline showing the gradual demise of train service to Union Station, plus an example of why Passenger Service to Denver became a matter of nostalgia versus profitability.

More than 50 black and white photographs by the author and others add to this tribute to the last years of commercial passenger train service to the base of the Rocky Mountains. South Platte Press, softcover, 64 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .25 in., B&W photographs, DUS Timeline, bibliography.

This book covers second-generation diesel power that was on the roster from September 1955 through December 1982 and provides an overview of this power during the Norfolk & Western's last years of existence.

The term second-generation is used to denote locomotives built from the early 1960s onward. Second-generation locomotives began, in the case of Electro-Motive Division, with the introduction of the GP20 model; with General Electric, the introduction of the U25B; and ALCO's introduction of the Century series of locomotives.

Exceptions to this guideline are the chapters on switchers and slugs. Most, but not all, photographs are limited to the time period covered. Includes roster, dispositions, lettering diagrams and color photo section.

Kansas City Southern has always been an unusual property, and this book examines some of the qualities that made it so. Its focus is on the period during which KCS was managed by three generations of the same family, a period that might be called the Deramus Era.

This book is not a study of management or of financial affairs, but rather of motive power and train operations. The heart of this book is the diesel age, but the age of steam that preceded it (and co-existed with it for 15 years) is covered, too.

KCS introduced the streamliner to its service territory, and the premier Southern Belle gets pilot-to-markers coverage. Included is a full steam and a full diesel roster to support the story of KCS's motive power and the trains it pulled - and occasionally pushed - in the Deramus Era.

A four-page color section and two pages of photographs of KCS bus and trucking equipment round out this book.

Contents:

• A Short History of the KCS before 1939, pp. 9–12

At first glance, the General Motors FP7 or FP9 looks like their freight-service counterparts. But on closer examination, the models extra four feet of length can be seen in the space between the first porthole and first louver.

This extra space was used to increase the boiler water capacity for the steam generator, allowing the unit to operate over longer distances, matching the unit's fuel capacity without the need for intermediate water stops.

The locomotives popularity is reflected in its sales numbers - 362 FP7s for 27 customers and 93 FP9s for four customers. Major U.S. owners included Atlantic Coast Line, Louisville & Nashville, Milwaukee Road, Pennsylvania Railroad, and Southern Railway.

North of the border, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific found the models ideal as did Mexican railroad, Nationales de Mexico. One chapter will cover the FP's close relative, the FL9. All owners, as well as secondary owners and operators in North America are covered in this 200 page, softcover book with a varied selection of color and black-and-white photographs.

The area surrounding Allentown and Bethlehem was quickly transformed as seven colorful legacy rail lines came under Conrail control in 1976. Over the next 24 years, this industrial region of eastern Pennsylvania would go through its own transformation, affecting traffic patterns for years to come.

Historian and photographer Olev Taremae explores these changes through colorful photographs and detailed text.

This book is not about detailed photographs of locomotive servicing facilities as the title suggests. Rather, steam and diesel locomotives are pictured at servicing facilities with the facilities as part of the photograph. The selection of photographs is of railroads that had facilities in the mid-West plus a couple of photographs of Canadian and Mexican steam.

No one railroad's photographs dominate the book. B&O, Nickel Plate, Rock Island, Milwaukee Road, C&NW, NYC and others are pictured. Spanning a nearly 40-year period from 1948 to 1984, legendary photographer Robert P. Olmsted visited engine terminals and roundhouses from Ohio to Nebraska, including brief visits to Canada and Mexico.

This book showcases his rich B&W photography, featuring beautiful portraits of steam and diesel locomotives. White River Productions, softcover, 56 pages, standard portrait book 8 x 10 in., B&W photographs. By Robert P. Olmsted

This is the story of the last railroad along Clear Creek until the demise of the narrow gauge operations of the Colorado & Southern west of Denver, Colorado in the spring of 1941.The formation of this railroad began on paper in 1865. Originally this line was the route of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. Reaching from Denver, Colorado along the South Platte River to the entrance of the South Platte Canon, the line went up the canon and over the mountains to reach a mining district known as the Mineral Belt. The DSP&P later became a subsidiary of the Colorado & Southern railroad.

Today, only a small branch of the line south of downtown Denver remains in operation. The former grade in the greater Denver area has been lost to urban development. The Mineral Belt was an area of great mineral wealth, and the railroad was needed to haul the gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, zinc, coal and other less valuable mineral deposits down out of the mountains.

But this was not the only traffic on the line, lumber and cattle were also sources of traffic. Many historical Black and White photographs supplement the text, including pictures of the steamers with their unique "Bear Trap" spark arrestors. The book is printed on high-quality, glossy paper.

This book is intended to be an overview of the Pennsylvania Railroad west of Pittsburgh to St. Louis in the years 1960 to 1999 in words and photographs.Beginning with the PRR in the late 1960s to the low points of the Penn Central era and concluding with the break-up of Conrail in 1999 this is not a detailed venture into railroad administrative records but information is drawn from employee timetables, bulletin orders, train schedules and other railroad documents.

Merger discussions with the New York Central in 1962 focused on the elimination of duplicate routes. As the planners shaped the future railroad NYC routes in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois were favored over the routes of the Pennsylvania due to aspects of the physical plant such as gradient, curvature, signaling and terminal facilities. For many reasons the resulting Penn Central became the largest bankruptcy of an American corporation up until the filing on June 21, 1970.

Later Conrail was formed from the ashes of the Penn Central and included many other now bankrupt carriers. Conrail became a profitable railroad with government subsidies and the Staggers Act allowing railroads more freedom to rationalize their plant and more freight rate leeway. Here in Color photographs and text is the story of this route of the former Pennsylvania Railroad.
