Unification of New York's rapid transit lines started on June 1, 1940. After a decade of rough-and-tumble politics, the Inter-borough Rapid Transit and the Brooklyn and Manhattan Transit properties had been bought by the city.

The properties were then combined with the municipal Independent Subway system. The combined operation was the New York Transit System run by the Board of Transportation. The board dated back to 1924 and, as an arm of the city government, was controlled by the mayor.

The Board thus lacked the independence needed to handle fundamentals such as setting fare levels to assure adequate income and establishing spending priorities on a strictly business-like basis. A fight by local politicians to retain this political power would massively consume the energies of the city, state, labor and civic groups throughout the 1940s and beyond.

The focus of this book is on the events of the 13 year period between unification and the transfer of the city's transit system to an independent entity-the New York Transit Authority.

This book illustrates the narrow gauge freight trains operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad between Alamosa, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico, during the years 1965 to 1968. The 92 miles of track connecting those two points were part of 293 miles of narrow and dual gauge railroad still then operated by the D&RGW, the remnant of what had once been an extensive narrow gauge railroad 'empire' in the Rocky Mountains.The Alamosa-Chama segment, notable for its mountain scenery, included a dramatic crossing of 10,015-foot high Cumbres Pass.

On April 1, 1976, the Central Railroad of New Jersey and Penn Central, co-owners and operators of the NY&LB, were absorbed along with other bankrupt northeastern roads into the Consolidated Rail Corporation. Conrail then began operating passenger service along its North Jersey Coast Line under contract for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

NJDOT had been funding replacement equipment for the states's commuter operations since the late 1960s. CNJ's shore trains had been re-equipped with new GP40Ps and coaches purchased from a variety of roads, some of which were Burlington Northern, Kansas City Southern and Rock island; however, by 1976, much of the former PC motive power and rolling stock covering the New York runs was suffering from years of deferred maintenance and required rebuilding or replacement.

The pressing need for service improvement served as the catalyst for the equipment variety seen on the following pages. E8s were rebuilt by Illinois Central Gulf at Paducah, KY, by Conrail at Elizabethport and General Electric at North Bergen. In an effort to present a new image for the benefit of passengers, NJDOT's blue, silver and red scheme, which had debuted on the U34CH fleet operating on former Erie Lackawanna lines out of Hoboken Terminal, began appearing on North Jersey Coast Line power.

Conrail provided its own E units and locomotives from its freight pool as required. Several E8s acquired from the Southern Railway added a splash of Southern green. Created in 1979, the colors of NJ Transit began appearing on locomotives in 1980. Further enhancing the equipment mix were Amtrak GG1s and E60CHs, which supplemented NJDOT's own GG1 fleet as needed.

In addition to passenger train operations, Conrail had its core business of freight trains to run and several views of freight action are included. Major improvements to the railroad's infrastructure took place as well during this period. Examples of such projects which appear in this book were the rehabilitation of the Navesink River bridge and the extension of electrification from South Amboy to Matawan.

Although the book is intended to serve as a photographic remembrance of North Jersey Coast Line operations under Conrail. NJ Transit assumed operation of the railroad from Conrail effective January 1, 1983, several images taken after this date have been included as they portray trains whose consists remain relatively unchanged from the Conrail period.

All in all, it was a fascinating period and provided the foundation for further enhancements resulting in the North Jersey Coast Line of today. Enjoy your ride through these pages. When introduced in 1955, the New Haven's EP-5 locomotives drew considerable attention from the media for both technical innovation and a sleek, streamlined appearance. But, the New Haven Railroad was beset with financial and management problems that would lead to poor performance records and reduced service reliability.

Bankruptcy and a re-evaluation of the New Haven's physical plant would lead to the only heavy overhaul the locomotives would ever see. By the time of the Penn Central merger, 40 percent of the fleet was in dead storage.

The final locomotive was retired in 1977.

In 1958 the Southern Pacific abandoned its Black Widow freight livery and colorful Daylight passenger livery in favor of a more economical paint scheme of Lark gray and scarlet for all power. Coinciding within a few months of the image change was the end of the first-generation of dieseldom, even though that particular phrase had not yet been coined.

The first diesels to also be delivered in the new livery were also SPs first low-nose hood units. The book picks up the story of SPs diesel power where Southern Pacific in Color Volume 2 left off.

To say the Rock Island's locomotive roster was unique is an understatement - from the unorthodox purchasing of 44-tonners from Davenport and Whitcomb rather than then-standard General Electric, to the late Alco-era C-415 switcher model and EMD (and EMC) TA and AB models, to the standard E7 and E8 designs.

Alco cab and booster units, re-engined by EMD, oddball Lima 800 HP LS800 models, and other abnormalities made The Rock a railfan's paradise in the 1960's and 1970's. Running on a shoestring budget in later years, the Rock Island acquired used locomotives from many sources, often through local supplier Precision National Corporation and suitor Union Pacific Railroad.

The Virginian Railway was known for gigantic steam locomotives, electrics, and Fairbanks-Morse diesels, all purchased for the purpose of hauling heavy coal trains out of West Virginia. After merger into Norfolk & Western in late 1959, much of the road still exists under Norfolk Southern and has been well-recorded in this book.
