Since the railroad era began, New York State's Capital Region has been an area of convergence -- most famously for the New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, and the Boston & Maine. However, from the 1960s through the 1990s, this area underwent a lot of change.

Mergers and abandonments left the Capital Region railroad scene scaled back at the end of this era. Author Tim Stockwell -- who was a child in the 1980s and 1990s -- witnessed a lot of this change but had not yet picked up a camera. Through the lenses of photographers like Jim Connor, Jeff Plant, Jeremy Plant, John Sesonske, Gordy Smith, and Jack Wright, Tim takes us on a journey through the Capital Region, with special attention paid to lines that no longer exist.

Volume 1 starts in Albany, then takes a geographical tour in the following order: the D&H Colonie Main Line, the D&H Waterford / Green Island Branch, Mechanicville Yard, the B&M / D&H 'Joint Mainline,' Saratoga Springs, the D&H Adirondack Branch, the Greenwich & Johnsonville, the B&M 'West End,' the B&M Troy Branch, the Penn Central, Conrail, and D&H in Troy, Rensselaer, Amtrak's Hudson Line, the Fort Orange Paper Company, the Upper Harlem Division, and the B&A.

Second Printing with additional pages and photographs. For almost twenty years the Union Pacific Railroad operated a fleet of gas turbine Electric Locomotive in their motive power stable to help move the heavy density of freight traffic that the historic railroad enjoys. Turbines Westward is the story of the unique chapter in railroad history, for the UP was the only railroad to own such power.

A total of fifty-nine turbine locomotives saw service on the Union Pacific, and all are pictured as the railroad and railfan saw them. Starting with the two steam turbine electrics of 1939, the story follows the development of the three different classes of gas turbine electrics that evolved from the original Big Blow.

The Omaha built coal turbine of 1962 is also featured along with the men who were responsible for the turbine era on the Union Pacific. Second Edition Supplement: More photographs and company data has been added to the book. Includes 325 photographs, roster, drawings and printed on high quality book stock.

Includes a three-page foldout diagram of coal-burning turbine number 80. Photographs are from Union Pacific files and rail fans. T. Lee Publications, softcover, 184 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .55 in., B&W photographs and illustrations, roster data.

Expect that the titles from this publisher will have minor cosmetic flaws. Books may have some scuffing on the dust jackets, minor tears in the jackets and small bumps on the corners. This is a small budget operation. You are not buying the books for their appearance, but for the information. Using a dust jacket cover will help their appearance.

Growing up Lisbon, Iowa, Randy Williams was fascinated with trains. After watching and photographing the Chicago & North Western in his hometown, Randy secured a job with the railroad. Working as an engineer, Randy ran trains on the Iowa Division and the coal lines in Wyoming.

Randy never lost his love for railroads. He diligently traveled around the country photographing railroad operations. Though the generous cooperation of his family, we can explore with Randy C&NW's train operations in Iowa and Illinois during the 1970s and 1980s. The book includes many photographs of mainline train operations between Cedar Rapids and Clinton, as well as trains running on the West Chicago to Chicago mainline.

Included are Falcon TOFC trains, coal trains, long manifests, and a special section covering commuter trains with E units and F units. There is even a visit to the Oelwein Diesel Shops.

This little title has quite a bit of data in it. It shows how departments in a division were organized, shows color maps of divisions over time until the final consolidation of divisions into regions. Branch lines assigned to each division are also included.

Pictures of each division office (often a depot with an upper floor) and huge grand division office buildings (high-rise) are shown. One of the most confusing aspects of Santa Fe Railway history has been what division a particular location or line belonged to at any point in time.

At various times La Junta, Colorado, belonged to the Western, Arkansas River, Colorado, Panhandle, or Kansas Division as well as the Eastern Region. This monograph tells the story of the changes in the Santa Fe's organization throughout its history.

It looks at the Santa Fe's organization by giving a snapshot of what was in existence at particular points in time and discusses the changes in between. The DVD version is the only version of this title Arizona Hobbies could obtain. This is a CD-ROM copy of the book of the same title which catalogs the known steam locomotives operated by one particular railroad business enterprise over the course of its corporate existence, commonly known as the Santa Fe Railway.

It is the first of two volumes, addressing the locomotive wheel arrangements used on the Santa Fe beginning in the 19th Century. In effect, this publication is a database - a formal collection of tables, summarizing and cross-referencing the more than three thousand steam locomotives owned and operated by the Santa Fe between 1869 and 1983.

These tabulations are the result of dozens of man-years of labor, beginning with the efforts of anonymous clerks in the offices of forgotten locomotive manufacturers and railroad corporations. Eventually Professor Sylvan R.

Wood, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, Stillwater, Oklahoma created a locomotive roster database for the Santa Fe.Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society, 590 pages on CD-ROM, 492 photographs, tables, folio drawings.

The Santa Fe and Grain Story tells the history of the Santa Fe's role in the transportation of grains and grain products over the last century. Wheat was the most important grain to the railroad, which had extensive lines throughout the Midwest, including the major wheat- producing states of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Eastern Kansas, Missouri and Illinois added corn-growing territory to the story, and eastern Texas featured rice. Other important grains were barley, oats and grain sorghums, all of which are discussed to some extent.

The farm economy for the entire life of the Santa Fe followed a boom-and-bust cycle. There were prosperous years when the railroad carried large amounts of grain where grain traffic was light. This made it difficult for the Santa Fe to plan for efficient use of cars and to project revenues.

The Santa Fe entered the trade by carrying grain in 25-ton capacity boxcars traveling relatively short distances. Over the next 125 years, grain cars increased in type and capacity: first to 50-ton boxcars, then to covered hopper cars (initially with 70-ton capacity), to today's cars with a capacity of over 140 tons.

As the type and capacity of cars was changing, there were also more grain cars per train traveling longer average distances so that by the end of the period, grain was moving long distances in solid unit trains.

This book is the first in a series to be produced by the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society discussing the Santa Fe's involvement with important commodities shipped on its lines.

Lee Berglund was a prolific photographer from Larned, Kansas, who documented the Santa Fe on the Great Plains encompassing Kansas, eastern Colorado - as far west as Trinidad and Denver - western Oklahoma, and northwest Texas as far south as Slaton. We see, through Lee's lens, the history of the Santa Fe's last 30 years in this territory at the heart of the Santa Fe.

During Lee's active years - 1964 to 1995 - the railroad experienced great changes. In 1964 Santa Fe's famous passenger service was in its final years, the all-purpose boxcar dominated freight trains, First-Generation diesel locomotives - although downgraded to secondary service - could still be seen and second-generation units were new and pulled the highest priority trains.

The familiar way car was in regular use. The small town depot was very much in evidence and a dense web of branch lines characterized the Santa Fe on the Great Plains. Over the next 30 years, all this would change; successive generations of motive power would invade the area, the way car would fade into history, many branch lines would be abandoned or sold to short line operators, agencies were closed as Santa Fe centralized freight offices and so went the depots.

Through Lee's lens, we see all these changes, beginning with Lee's home turf, the Great Bend District, followed by a look at Santa Fe branch line railroading, Great Plains style. And in the final four chapters we focus primarily on Santa Fe's mainlines on the Great Plains. All in all, Lee Berglund, through his photographic efforts in the Great Plains, has contributed much to the canon of the Santa Fe.

This Volume is a tribute to Lee and his work. Santa Fe Railway H&MS, softcover, 152 pages, 12 x 8.5 x .5 in., 276 Color photographs, full color map and timetable reproductions.

The Northern Pacific's Rails To Gold and Silver-Lines to Montana's Mining Camps Volume II: 1888-1898. In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railroad completed its main line through Montana. Its charter and the conservative nature of its management prevented the NP from building branch lines to developing gold, silver and copper mining camps such as Wallace, Cooke City, Elkhorn, Pony and Virginia City.

James J. Hill of the Great Northern Railway recognized the NP's omission and began building a railroad into the territory. By 1886 the NP, aided by Helena banker Samuel T. Hauser, was in an all-out war with Hill and the Union Pacific to protect its mining traffic sources. Rails to Gold and Silver: Volume II covers the Northern Pacific & Montana's construction between 1888 and 1898 which resulted in the completion of the following six railroads: the Rocky Fork & Cooke City, the Butte Short Line, the Red Bluff & Pony, the Elkhorn Extension to the Helena, Boulder Valley & Butte, the Gaylord & Ruby Valley, and the De Smet to Idaho Line (Wallace branch) Pictorial Histories Publishing, softcover, 156 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., B&W photographs and illustrations.

Here we have the story of the Los Angeles & San Pedro Railroad and its founder Phineas Banning. The book is well written and historically researched. This company was acquired by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1876 as part of the agreement that the same would build from San Francisco to Los Angeles, literally putting the latter on the map.

This trackage remains in use today for freight trains to and from Los Angeles Harbor.

The Southern Pacific Railroad and Santa Fe Railway were so sure their proposed merger would be approved by the Federal Government, that they went ahead and painted over 400 locomotives in the new company's paint scheme.

The merger never happened, but their wishful thinking resulted in a colorful and unique period in the history of these two venerable railroads.

This book starts out with color photos of Missouri Pacific steam pulling heavyweight trains. These photos are pretty much 3/4 wedge shots with not much more than the locomotives filling the frame. Quite a few trains are in the full Eagle paint with later pages containing photographs of the solid blue paint.

Two pictures of #670, the "MotoRailer" in the Eagle paint scheme are neat. Locations from all over Missouri Pacific routes where selected for the book. Many scenes are from St.

Louis and Kansas City, but many smaller stations such as Laredo, Sedalia, Kirkwood, Corpus Christi and others appear. Motive power includes all types from Alco PAs to E-units, Geeps and switchers at the large terminals.

A couple pictures of MoPac's bulk mail boxcars, later-day Amtrak service, business cars and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois round out the book. This volume has more extensive captions than most Morning Sun books.
