The Ban on Nuclear Testing and the Hardtack Series
Before we start, we need to cover the prehistory of Doorknob Model Rocket. During the mid-1950’s, the US and Russian nuclear testing caused public concerns over nuclear fallout to reach a fevered pitch. In response, President Eisenhower announced a ban on further nuclear testing on or before October 31, 1958.
US scientists disregarded the ban and conducted the Hardtack Series of tests to collect data on radioactivity effects from both underwater and above-ground detonations. The program consisted of 35 detonations in the Pacific Proving Grounds from April to August 1958.
Measuring the Effects of Radioactivity
Scientists were chiefly concerned about damage to the ozone layer and possible effects of long-range radioactive fallout. To measure the earth's upper atmosphere, they developed single and two-stage Doorknob rockets. They could capture radioactive data for analysis at altitudes of approximately 50 miles.
Early results indicated minimal or no damage to the ozone layer from the nuclear testing. Additionally, it's possible that water detonations generated enough ozone to compensate for any loss caused by above-ground testing.

History of the Saturn 1B
Before there was the Saturn V, there was the Saturn 1B, the NASA test bed for Apollo flight hardware. The Saturn 1B test flew versions of the Apollo Command and Service Module, and the Lunar Module.
Initially tested as the second stage on the Saturn 1B rocket, the S-IVB upper stage eventually served as the third stage of the Saturn V rocket. The Saturn 1B would eventually see service as the primary launch vehicle for Earth orbit missions in the Apollo spacecraft.
Features of the Rocket
One of the distinctive features of the Saturn 1B is the set of cylindrical tanks that forms the rocket’s first stage. Sometimes people misidentify the tanks as re-purposed Redstone missile stages because they resemble a cluster of smaller rockets.
In fact, these 70-inch diameter tanks were created using the same forms that produced the Redstone rockets. So, while they share a common lineage, they were not surplus rockets themselves. The tanks fueled eight H-1 engines, four of which could gimbal to steer the rocket while under power. Eight low profile fins ringed the base of the rocket for guidance during atmospheric flight.
Saturn 1B Launches
In February of 1966, NASA launched the first Saturn 1B rocket with an early version of the Apollo Command and Service Modules. There was no crew aboard. The subsequent Saturn 1B launch of Apollo 7 on October 11, 1968 certified the Apollo spacecraft for human spaceflight. It would be the last Saturn 1B launch for nearly five years.
After the final Apollo moon landing in 1972, NASA used the last Saturn V to launch the Skylab Orbital Workshop. Three crews would eventually be sent to live and work in the space station. Each crew was launched aboard an Apollo Command Module carried by a Saturn 1B. Each launched aboard an Apollo Command Module carried by a Saturn 1B.
The first of the three Skylab crews lifted-off on Saturn 1B vehicle SA-206 and stayed for 28 days. Their first task in orbit was to repair Skylab after an accident at launch ripped away a solar panel and sun shield. Led by Apollo 12 moon walker Pete Conrad, the crew performed a dangerous EVA and successfully rescued the space station.

A Truly Historic Rocket!
As the tallest, heaviest and most powerful rocket ever produced, the original Saturn V was a 3-stage rocket that stood 363 feet high (110.6m), weighed approximately 6.2 million pounds and generated 7.6 million pounds of thrust at lift off. At just over 36 stories tall, it stood about 60 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, making it quite an impressive site on the launch pad.
The Saturn V was at the heart of NASA’s Apollo and Skylab programs as it was able to launch a 45-ton payload beyond low earth orbit, which was necessary for sending men to the moon. A total of 13 Saturn V launches took place between 1967 and 1973, delivering 24 astronauts successfully to the moon and back to earth. The first launch of the Saturn V rocket was during the Apollo 4 mission of 1967, and was a crew-less launch meant to test the rocket. The first launch with a crew occurred in December of 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission which sent astronauts in orbit around the moon but did not land. Apollo 9 added another piece to the puzzle as the moon lander was tested by flying in Earth's orbit, and Apollo 10 saw the lander launch to the moon, testing its space flight again without landing. Then came Apollo 11 in 1969, changing the space race forever!
We were finally able to land astronauts on the moon and take that famous first step into the future. Successful missions followed with the Saturn V rocket, landing astronauts on the moon during Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17. The last launch of this historic rocket came in 1973 when it was used to launch the Skylab space station into Earth orbit.

The History of Star Hopper Rocket
Let's take a look at the history of Star Hopper Rocket. In June of 1947, an experienced civilian pilot reported “saucer-like discs” over Mount Rainier. Strange lights appeared in the sky before then but never like this!
By July, the papers ran stories about a rancher who discovered strange wreckage in the desert near Roswell. Accounts of mystery “aircraft” and other unknown aerial phenomena were gaining public notice. Something strange was going on and the people in charge wanted answers.
