By Jeremy F. Plant, Jeffrey G. Plant, and Jonathan W. Plant.
Step aboard the vibrant world of the Burlington Northern in this richly illustrated volume capturing the evolution, operations, and scenic journeys of the BN system as it carved its path from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. Through over two decades of transformation — from the post-merger legacy of Great Northern, Northern Pacific, CB&Q, and SP&S to the dawn of the BNSF era — the Plants chronicle the railroad's locomotives, freight service, passenger operations, and the iconic Cascade Green paint scheme that defined an era.
Featuring stunning color photography from 1971 to 1995, this book is an essential record of one of America's great western railroads during a period of dramatic change.

5 x 11 in., B&W and Color photographs and illustrations. In 1868, the Buffalo Creek Railroad was incorporated as the first terminal railroad in the United States. Designed to tap into the growing grain milling business and Lake Erie commercial traffic, this five-mile railroad, concentrated entirely in Buffalo, New York, became the busiest terminal railroad of its size by the early 20th century.
Even though the railroad’s service became synonymous with Buffalo's grain milling and flour industry, it also served a significant amount of the chemical and oil business in the area. The railroad began to dieselize in the 1930s, completing the process in 1948. It was an all-ALCo road after 1956.This book covers the railroad's last 26 years of operations from 1950 to 1976 and its integration into Conrail.
Additional chapters cover the detailed histories and dispositions of the railroad's fleet of diesel locomotives (primarily ALCo end-cab switchers) and its wide-ranging fleet of 2,000 40-foot boxcars, used to transport Buffalo's grain products to locations as far away as Mexico City and Vancouver. Illustrated with over 150 photos, with about 75% of those in full color.

Each of the 35 classes of cabooses from the predecessor railroads that made up Conrail are presented. Often prior paint schemes and then Conrail paint schemes are shown. There are usually 3-4 photographs representing each class. Some classes have floor diagrams as part of the short chapter. A table for each class shows which cabooses were on the roster for April 1, 1976, June 6, 1981, and April 8, 1986.
Conrail was formed just before the end of the caboose era which will make this title more interesting as the predecessor railroads of Conrail were from the caboose era. As with all early Conrail operations, the many paint schemes of the cabooses, cars and locomotives make for a great color book. Plus add in the roster of over 2,500 cabooses, this will be a great reference title, too.
The Garbely Publishing Company has partnered with The Conrail HS to produce the definitive guide to Conrail cabooses. Authored by GPCo (and CRHS) president Rudy Garbely with contributions from The CRHS staff, this book will include all 35 classes of Conrail cabooses, complete with the histories of each class and stories from Conrail employees that worked on them.
This book also contains information on cars that were destined for the Conrail roster but never operated on Conrail. The book includes over 600 color photographs, 28 original Conrail car diagrams, and detailed roster entries for over 2,500 cabooses. All author royalties from the sale of this book are being donated to The Conrail HS.

Since the railroad era began, New York State's Capital Region has been an area of convergence -- most famously for the New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, and the Boston & Maine. However, from the 1960s through the 1990s, this area underwent a lot of change. Mergers and abandonments left the Capital Region railroad scene scaled back at the end of this era. Author Tim Stockwell -- who was a child in the 1980s and 1990s -- witnessed a lot of this change but had not yet picked up a camera. Through the lenses of photographers like Jim Connor, Jeff Plant, Jeremy Plant, John Sesonske, Gordy Smith, and Jack Wright, Tim takes us on a journey through the Capital Region, with special attention paid to lines that no longer exist.
Volume 2 starts in Albany, then takes a geographical tour south and west of the city.

The Milwaukee Road Racine & Southwestern Division: The Rest of the Story continues Jerry Pyfer’s previous Tales from the Racine & Southwestern, his firsthand account of life on one of the Milwaukee Road’s most memorable divisions during its final years. Rather than a traditional corporate history, this book captures the everyday reality of railroading in southeastern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois through personal stories and a wealth of photographs, many published here for the first time. Pyfer draws on his own experiences working train service between 1971 and 1978, presenting railroading as it was lived — imperfect, demanding, and deeply human.
Arranged largely in chronological order, the book allows readers to follow the evolution and decline of the Racine & Southwestern Division as the Milwaukee Road faced aging infrastructure, power shortages, and financial collapse. Richly illustrated and candidly told, The Rest of the Story is an essential companion to Tales from the Racine & Southwestern and a compelling read for Milwaukee Road enthusiasts, railroad historians, and anyone interested in the working railroad of the 1970s.

, B&W.The Union Pacific Railroad's dining cars were renowned for their service and food quality. The UP's well-trained chefs and waiters provided some of the world's finest cuisine while rolling along the eastern seaboard's steel highways. The procedures and, more importantly, the recipes used to provide that service were compiled into a single volume for the staff's reference and guidance on board the train. This exact reprint of the UP's Dining Car Cookbook and Service Instructions dates from circa 1955, after the Milwaukee Road began handling UP trains between Chicago and Omaha.
It is reproduced from an original copy in The Garbely Publishing Company's collection, which includes updates through the end of UP passenger service in 1971. From uniquely exotic 1950s recipes to those that are familiar to the modern reader, this book contains hundreds of recipes that were originally prepared aboard a UP dining car, including sauces, salads, sandwiches, entrees, sides, and desserts.Simplicity was key aboard a rolling kitchen with limited space and ingredients, and the UP's signature dishes were designed to provide the flavor of a five-star restaurant with limited expense, time, and effort - all traits that translate well to home cooking!
With many of the recipes written for cooking in bulk for a train full of passengers, this book also makes the perfect companion to any event from an upscale dinner party to a backyard barbecue. This historic book is a must-have for both the avid culinary historian and the casual railroad enthusiast.

5 in., B&W photographs and roster data. The famous run of the Stourbridge Lion in Honesdale, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1829, marked the first operation of a steam locomotive in North America. Its operator and owner, the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company, was only six years old at the time, but the beginning of steam railroading in the United States was just one of the D&H's lasting contributions to the railroad industry.Over the next 124 years, the D&H would construct its own steam locomotives, purchase some of the largest steam locomotives ever used on the east coast of the United States, and experiment with some of the most unique and innovative steam locomotive designs ever seen on American rails (including those with European-style headlights!).This book is laden with photographs, diagrams, specifications, and roster information for every one of the D&H's steam locomotives between 1828 and 1953 - the full length of the D&H's steam era.

, B&W. The pages of this original mid-century cookbook have been painstakingly scanned and digitally retouched to eliminate fading, staining, and other age issues found in the original. The reader will find dishes that are remarkably similar to modern-day standards, as well as some that are very "of the time." Only a handful of recipes include ingredient lists, and some of the instructions are vague; a certain level of culinary experience and knowledge to fill in these blanks was required before a Southern Pacific employee would even be issued one of these cookbooks.
Most of the recipes are designed for single-portion cooking, which is different from most railroad cookbooks of the era. This book presents the recipes exactly as the Southern Pacific set them forth on paper in 1944, spiral-bound and in a new larger format for ease of use in the kitchen. We hope you enjoy preparing these authentic "Espee" dishes in your own home!
