After the Conrail startup in 1976, the former Erie Lackawanna main line from northern New Jersey to Buffalo was thrown open to the combined operations of three colorful railroads. Supposedly in the name of competition, Conrail, the Delaware & Hudson and the New York, Susquehanna & Western operated an eclectic fleet of new and secondhand power along this scenic route and home trackage of D&H and NYS&W.

Erie Railroad authority Bob Collins had the "inside track" on the goings-on and was there to capture the action. Morning Sun Books, softcover, 96 pages, 10 x 8 x .5 in., all Color photographs with captions.

"Open Top Load" is the term given to the carriage of products or commodities on flatcars or gondolas. These products usually fit into two categories: 1) they are too large or bulky to fit into boxcars and/or 2) they are loose inexpensive material not suitable for a hopper car.

These titles feature large color photos of flatcars and gondolas with such loads, mostly recorded in the 1960s to the 1980s. The volumes are differentiated by the product or commodity carried, each which carry different AAR requirements for bracing, banding or other special instructions.

Volume 4 includes: Scrap Metal, Structural Steel, Tanks and Boiler Shells, Prefabricated Track and Switches, Transformers, Trucks, Wallboard and Plywood, Wheels, Wrecked Railroad Carbodies, and miscellaneous loads.and miscellaneous loads.

From the late 1960s through the late 1970s, photographer Ed Horm captured the Baltimore & Ohio, Bessemer & Lake Erie, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, Penn Central, Conrail, the Union Railroad, and a number of short lines and industrial operations around "The Steel City" of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Hardcover with dust jacket, 128 pages, standard portrait format, Color photographs.

Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial Volume 5: Chicago to Phillipsburg, New Jersey by David R. SweetlandBeginning in Chicago, this book is a look at the last of steam and first and second-generation diesels of Pennsylvania Railroad power and locations. Therefore the era of the pictures covers the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

An eight-page section on PRR diesel switchers starts the coverage and then on to the geographic locations. Included are some pictures of PRR electrics but first-generation diesels dominate this volume. Four Ways West Publications, hardcover, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., color photographs.

Volume Two continues Four Ways West Publications Publications' New Haven Railroad pictorial series of all-color books, this time focusing on New Haven's operations in central Connecticut and Rhode Island. This book also reviews New Haven's road-switchers and switchers purchased from ALCO, EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, General Electric and Lima between 1931 and 1965.

The photographic trip begins at Old Saybrook and covers New Haven's back lines in Connecticut and the branch lines of Rhode Island as well as the Shore Line route from New London to Providence ending at Boston Switch. Four Ways West Publications, hardcover, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., all Color photographs.

This Volume begins with a section on the development of Electric Locomotive on the Pennsylvania Railroad. The motive power story, through the use of photographs, starts in St. Louis and moves eastward through Indianapolis, Columbus and Pittsburgh with several side trips. At Enola, our train moves under the wire for its journey to New York.

The P5s, GG1s and E44s are the focus of this book on the east end of the PRR system with B1, 01 and L6 Electric Locomotive used to pull our train as often as possible. Included are photographs of leased Santa Fe 4-8-4s in 1956 along with many other Color photographs from the late steam and early diesel era on this part of the Pennsy.

Four Ways West Publications, hardcover, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., all Color photographs.

This book presents reflections on the operations of the Illinois Central and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio railroads which merged and became the Illinois Central Gulf in 1972. In 1988 the merged railroad was renamed the Illinois Central after many GM&O routes were spun off as short line and regional railroads.

Examined are operations in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Indiana. An amazing amount of information and data were gathered to produce this book. The ICG had an interesting history and much of it is contained in this title. Four Ways West, hardcover, 144 pages, all-color photographs and illustrations.

Volume Two is a continuation of the authors' efforts to provide a pictorial history of the railroads of Maine since 1950. This second Volume could be subtitled: Two Decades of Change. These changes include the consolidation of railroads, the embargo or abandonment of certain lines, the outright sale of properties and the start-up of new regional and short line railroads.

As with Volume One, the book is laid out geographically, and the authors have tried to provide as much relevant information as possible with each photo caption. Four Ways West Publications, hardcover, 128 pages, 8.5 x 11 x .5 in., all Color photographs.

Four Ways West Publications, hardcover, 208 pages, 8.5 x 11 x.75 in., B&W and color (23 pages) photographs.

The earliest explorers and settlers in central New York first used ancient Indian trails to enter the region. Over time, primitive dirt roads, plank roads, and turnpikes in combination with the navigable portions of the Susquehanna River and its tributaries greatly aided expansion into the lands southwest of Albany.

Eventually, the broad gauge Albany & Susquehanna Railroad - a predecessor of the powerful, renowned Delaware & Hudson Railroad - formed what would be regarded as the ultimate link in the transportation system that connected Albany with Binghamton.

Besides accelerating community growth, the railroad spurred the development and facilitated the growth of local industry - limestone and cement, dairy and agriculture, and the manufacturing of tools, wagons, wood products, and machinery.

In his inimitable style, Mr. Taibi engages the reader on a point-to-point tour, weaving an entertaining story around how these three phases of passage - the Roads, Rivers, and Rails - created lifelines for the interior towns.

This book contains more than 500 color, sepia, and black & white illustrations - from vintage stereo views of A&S/D&H operations to Electric Locomotive Color photographs of current owner Canadian Pacific Rail with Norfolk Southern operations via trackage rights.

Early D&H steam and the most modern diesels - AC4400CW, SD60, SD90, ES44AC, C40-9W, and ES40DC - are shown at various locations. Union Pacific run-through power is also included. Among those places visited in this first installment of Roads, Rivers, and Rails, are Voorheesville, Altamont, Delanson, Cobleskill, Richmondville, Worcester, Schenevus, and Oneonta.

Volume II will begin the story anew at Oneonta and continue on to Otego, Unadilla, Sidney, Bainbridge, Afton, and Nineveh - concluding at the 'Parlor City,' Binghamton.

Route of the Cariboo: Pacific Great Eastern - British Columbia RailThis title is now outdated as it was published in 1994. The history and the photographs are still relevant today, though.Route of the Cariboo presents railroading in one of North America's most scenic and rugged regions. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway was incorporated in 1912 to serve a sparsely populated wilderness whose natural resources were expected to sustain train traffic.

For many years afterwards, the line operated at a loss and was several times threatened with abandonment, its two disconnected segments taken over by the provincial government and its initials - PGE - jokingly was said to mean the "Province's Great Elephant." Today's modern BC Rail system covers over 1,200 miles and barely resembles the old PGE operation, although the fantastic scenery is still there.

Tourists come from around the world to enjoy it, travelling on BC Rail's efficient Rail Diesel Cars or aboard the summertime Royal Hudson Steam Train which offers the continent's last regularly scheduled mainline steam-powered passenger service. This first fully-illustrated history of the PGE and BC Rail includes nearly 400 photographs and illustrations, including 64 pages in full color, showing the trains, stations, people and tracks that make up this fascinating railway.

The informative text includes numerous entertaining first-hand accounts and anecdotes, plus maps and equipment rosters. Readers who have not yet travelled over BC Rail will wonder why, before they finish this volume.

Henry Edward Huntington's impact on the public transportation system of Southern California was far reaching. His Pacific Electric red interurban went everywhere. That is except for the western portions of Los Angeles county where Moses Sherman's and E.

P. Clark's 180-mile Los Angeles Pacific Railroad dominated. By 1903, Huntington and the Southern Pacific controlled by Edward H.

Harriman had become partners in the Pacific Electric. During March 1906, Harriman negotiated with Sherman and Clark, for control of their railway. In the meantime Huntington operating on his own acquired the narrow-gauge Los Angeles and Redondo Railway.

It had 89 miles of track, including 3 lines to Redondo Beach. Harriman always had in his mind the merging of the Pacific Electric with the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, thus forming a huge interurban empire.

R.S. Lovett, Harriman's successor at Southern Pacific negotiated the sale of Huntington's interest in Pacific Electric to Southern Pacific by November of 1910 for an undisclosed sum. Once the Southern Pacific had control of the Pacific Electric, the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad was merged into the Pacific Electric, thus becoming the Western Division of the Pacific Electric.

When the Massachusetts towns of Bedford and Billerica clamored for a railroad, George E. Mansfield appeared on the scene and sold them on a new, inexpensive way to build one. He finished the line in 1877 and it was acclaimed around the world as a brilliant new departure in railroad building.

The Billerica and Bedford Railroad delivered everything its promoter said it would but, yet, it failed financially in less than a year. What happened to cause this failure? Using original railroad documents and letters along with newspaper and trade journal articles, the author delves into the behind-the-scenes machinations that plagued this 8? mile line.

The backgrounds of the people involved are explored to determine their goals and motivations. Numerous drawings of the railroad rolling stock and structures are included along with examinations of the technical aspects of line which made it so revolutionary.

George Mansfield went on to build the Sandy River Railroad as well as the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad, both of which survived into the 1930s and beyond. After only six years of railroad building, though, Mansfield seemingly vanished from the railroad scene without building another railroad.

This is the story of the pioneer two-footer which paved the way for the more successful narrow-gauge lines built in Maine and other locations around the country. It is also the story of the promoter of the Mansfield System of two-foot gauge railroads, who he was, where he came from and what happened to him and his dreams.
