This is the story of the Dolly Varden Mine and the Dolly Varden Mines Railway, 18 miles of improbable narrow gauge iron reaching north from the little community of Alice Arm to this rich silver property, now a legend in the annals of mining in British Columbia. In the years between 1916 and 1922, the Dolly Varden Mine was both the brightest hope and the greatest disappointment of the mining industry of Northwest Canada.

PREORDERS ARE DUE BY DECEMBER 1, 2026! by Rudy Garbely Publisher: The Garbely Publishing CompanyReleased: to be released March 2027ISBN: TBAPages: ~200Format: 8.5"x11" limited edition hardcover When Conrail began operations in 1976, it inherited a patchwork fleet of weary first-generation EMD Geeps — locomotives like the GP7, GP9, GP9B, GP18, and GP20 — from its six bankrupt predecessor railroads. First-Generation Conrail Geeps tells the story of these classic locomotives and the roles they played in keeping Conrail’s system running during its earliest and most challenging years. Drawing from extensive rosters, detailed research, and hundreds of rare photographs, this book chronicles how these dependable workhorses served in every corner of the system, from bustling main lines to the most remote branch lines. The book also covers Conrail’s extensive rebuilding efforts that produced the GP8s and GP10s — programs designed to extend the lives of aging Geeps at a fraction of the cost of new power. With in-depth coverage of both the original and rebuilt locomotives, First-Generation Conrail Geeps offers readers a complete look at how Conrail’s shop forces, contractors, and management transformed a worn-out roster into a reliable backbone of local, yard, and secondary service. This volume is an essential addition for fans of Conrail, EMD locomotives, or American railroad history.

The I&M Rail Link, a significant midwestern regional railroad, spanned over 1,300 miles of track during its operation. With a fleet of 118 locomotives, it managed 29 scheduled trains along with several additional daily services under a haulage agreement with Union Pacific.

The I&M's locomotives were distinguished by their elegant royal blue bodies, white nose stripes, black roofs, and a striking hint of red, reminiscent of its sister road, Montana Rail Link. This railroad was active for just over five years, from April 1997 to July 2002, before its acquisition by Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern, which subsequently rebranded it as Iowa, Chicago & Eastern.

Notable Iowa native photographer Randy J. Williams expertly documented the I&M's operations during this period through his exceptional photography. This book features an impressive collection of over 140 color photographs, showcasing nearly every engine type in dynamic action scenes.

It also includes a curated selection of 16 prime roster photos to further enhance its visual appeal. Additional content encompasses a comprehensive roster list, train schedules, a detailed train activity map, and a mile-by-mile listing of all points across the I&M Rail Link’s six subdivisions.

The I&M Rail Link was recognized as a 'Midwest Powerhouse' by Trains Magazine on the cover of their September 2000 issue. Today, this vital trackage serves as a crucial link connecting Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern in the merger that formed CPKC.

Contents:

• Comprehensive 80-page softcover by George Povall
• Features over 140 vibrant color photographs of I&M Rail Link locomotives
• Includes a detailed roster list, train schedules, and activity maps
• Captures the essence of the I&M Rail Link's operational years from 1997 to 2002
• Recognized by Trains Magazine as a 'Midwest Powerhouse'

The end of the industrial steam age in North America resulted in many steam locomotives being relegated to parks or museums. However, during the regular use of steam, there were many instances in which steam engines became "lost locomotives," often by either sinking into deep bodies of water by accident or by being intentionally abandoned in place.

Many of these stories of lost locomotives now range from fact to urban myth. This book examines some of the best known cases of forlorn or abandoned steam engines that have been recorded over the past century. It includes an extensive appendix section detailing known or rumored lost locomotives.South Platte Press, softcover, 102 pages, 54 B&W illustrations and photographs.

After collecting all that rolling stock over the years, it's time to build a layout and add those structures! The author is an MMR (master model railroader) and the photos are high-quality printed on quality paper.

I especially like the HO scale model of the M-K-T depot at Boonville, Missouri which is a Spanish-style structure. There are many good ideas here. Structures are a key part of your model railroad, providing visual interest as well as backdrop for your layout.

The Structure Handbook for Model Railroaders offers modelers new skills, tips, and tricks that can be applied to the construction, finishing, and placement of structures in any scale.

This book tells the story of the 3-foot-gauge Pacific Coast Railway. For some 66 years this line ran from the deep water harbor at Port Harford (later Port San Luis) on the Central California coast, north through San Luis Obispo, and then south to the sleepy little town of Los Olivos.

This book is an excellent reference work about this railway with station track plans, structure and equipment plans.

This book has quite a selection of early airlines and airliners including famous, infamous and little-known ones. The first picture is of an Air West F-27 at San Diego in Pacific Airlines paint. The book includes Braniff's Great Pumpkin landing at LAX, Lockheed Electras in various paint schemes plus a couple of photographs of Zia Airlines which lasted a few years flying around New Mexico.

Longtime railroad historian and South Platte Press author I.E. Quastler turns to his other major transportation interest, airlines, for this fascinating look at the more unique aspects of commercial aviation.

The aircraft photographed by the author for this book, starting in 1969, range from commuter airliners at unusual locations to jumbo jets in flight. The topics also range from airlines and services that lasted only a few months, to those of long standing which may be unfamiliar to many readers.

Short essays describe the content and setting of each photograph. This book is being made available to South Platte Press for distribution by R&I Press.

This volume is the second of several that will document the history of Union Pacific's fleet of diesel and turbine locomotives, from 1934 to today's roster. Although the current roster has been covered in two earlier works, the six-decade period that leads up to today can be split into two distinct eras.

The first, the Classic Era, covers in two volumes the unit-by-unit roster from 1934, with the arrival of the first Streamliners, to 1982, when Union Pacific embarked on the first of its major mergers. Follow-on volumes will cover the Merger Era, from 1982 through UP's acquisition of the C&NW, to the 1996 merger with Southern Pacific.

Classic Era Volume Two begins with the 1000-series switchers and continues numerically upward with the road numbers to the end. Included between the two Volumes is a full chronology of the development of Union Pacific's diesel locomotive fleet, and a listing of all locomotive models and their quantities up to 1982, including retirements and dispositions to that date.

Contents:

• Union Pacific Diesel Locomotive Paint Schemes, pp. 5–16
• Locomotive Roster 1932-1982, p. 18

Following a long progression of end-cab switchers beginning in 1939, EMD's SW1500 model was introduced at the zenith of switcher production, the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring the builders newly introduced 645-series prime mover, the model offered customers a unit that was suitable for yard, local, and even road freight service.

During the model's eight-year production cycle, no distinct construction changes took place, but options specified by the 58 original customers, such as truck style, fuel tank capacity, and handrail placement, divided the production into eight separate groups.

This 124-page softcover book covers these pioneering diesels in text, 110 color and 325 B&W photographs, and drawings in the style you've come to expect from Withers Publishing.

Contents:

• SW1500 Spotting Features, pp. 8–14

Mention the name Sherman Hill to railroad enthusiasts and images of Union Pacific's mammoth steam locomotives, colorful Armour yellow streamliners, and lonely wind-swept landscapes come to mind. Since the railroad first reached the area in 1867, 'The Hill' has been an operating challenge that demands the newest and most powerful locomotives to lift tonnage over the summit.

This photographic journey not only highlights the diesel and turbine power that operated over the Hill since 1960 but also showcases the desolate beauty of this area.

An over-looked piece of essential railroad equipment that had to be ready to go to work at a moment's notice, nearly all of North America's railroads owned equipment to move snow. Includes some photographs of plows in action, some fresh from the paint shop. Includes two former Rock Island tender snowplows painted in C&NW in colors.

This first volume will picture the equipment of railroads with names beginning with A through D. The proper name of the company will be used in the alphabetical list. Railroads such as the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific (Rock Island) will be included in this volume. It includes the Santa Fe (AT&SF), Burlington Northern, BNSF, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and Denver & Rio Grande Western plus many more.

This title generally has one large image per page. As this is a larger format book, the images are quite large. The photographs are sharp so there is a lot of detail in them to investigate.

There are a number of locomotive illustrations in color which are very nice to give you an idea of how colorful the early locomotives were. Each one seems to be its own work of art. It was a glorious period that has been termed the days of "wooden cars and iron men." Today it is difficult to even comprehend the tremendous amounts of energy, manpower and money that went into constructing the Denver & Rio Grande into and across the Rocky Mountains.

The courage, determination and sheer guts of such an undertaking are impressively apparent today on the two remaining portions of three-foot gauge trackage out of Durango, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico.

By 1883, William Jackson Palmer's "Narrow Gauge Transcontinental" mainline stretched 771 miles from Denver, Colorado to Ogden, Utah. The Pullman sleeper-equipped Pacific Express (westbound) and the eastbound Atlantic Express operated on a forty-one and a-half hour schedule and was trailed by "named" parlor cars.

Elsewhere, on the Cumbres Pass line in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, the daily Colorado & New Mexico Express ran in both directions between Salida, Alamosa and Durango, with a helper being added for the 14 miles of steep four-percent grade between Chama and the 10,015-foot summit at Cumbres.

A hike along the abandoned grades over Marshall, Cerro Summit and Poncha Pass is sure to bring visions of a small 2-8-0 Consolidation and a diminutive 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler as they blasted upgrade with an 1890s varnish run.

You can almost hear the double header's exhaust, smell the coal smoke mixed with valve oil and feel the saturated steam as the consist passes. After over 60 years of research and what the late Robert W.

Richardson termed "picture hunting", this book is a pictorial history of the D&RG's narrow gauge. The Rio Grande Glory Days are preserved here in rare old photographs and art. Climb aboard for the ride of your life as we relive the days when the world and the Rio Grande were young.

Almost every quality photograph available from 1873 to 1921 has been included in this volume. No Rio Grande or early railroading enthusiast will want to be without Ferrell's 22nd (and last) book.

While the American Locomotive Company (Alco) ceased domestic production in 1969, many of their designs continue to enjoy productive careers to this day. These classic diesels have developed their own loyal fan following from coast to coast. Throttle up and enjoy this exciting collection of Alco articles from the pages of Railfan & Railroad. The glory days are gone, and their ranks diminished, but a half-century after Alco called it quits, their locomotives labor on. It's a testament to the rugged nature of the machines and to the dedication of the keepers of the faith that maintain and operate these Alco survivors.

This volume continues the series of high-quality titles about the Denver & Rio Grande Western published by White River Productions. High-quality in the photograph reproduction, the selection of images and the thick, glossy paper used in a large-format hardbound book. Many pages have one large photograph, some 2 to 3 images.

Most photographs give a good view of the spectacular scenery along with the trains and the reason for the trains, the industries served. The captions are extensive and there are a number of color maps. There are a few, nice, steam-powered train photographs from 1941 that are included here. Colorado is a beautiful state, but so is Utah which may have been under-photographed on the Rio Grande vs.

Colorado.Expect more great photography of the Denver & Rio Grande Western as it traverses the barren, but beautiful in its own way, expanse of the American West. This route had the famous grade over Soldier Summit which was one of the many obstacles for this relatively smaller main-line railroad. That the Rio Grande could compete with the Union Pacific with a more direct route to Salt Lake City was amazing. This third volume covering the Denver & Rio Grande Western in the era of color photography examines the origins and ultimate demise of the D&RGW's Utah Division between Grand Junction, Colorado, and Ogden, Utah.

Built by the same General Palmer who had contributed so much to the early Denver & Rio Grande in Colorado, the line across the eastern Utah desert to the Wasatch Front never had large precious mineral deposits as the siren song attraction for railroad construction. This road would rely on the more mundane carloads of coal, iron ore, and copper as its early mainstay.Following the merger of the Utah and Colorado lines in 1908, the company began focusing on upgrading its property and soliciting traffic from far beyond the borders of its two home states.

This transcontinental traffic, along with the burgeoning coal business developed after World War II, would make the D&RGW a successful and profitable property, despite being surrounded by much larger, often unfriendly carriers. A portion of the Utah Division's history is noted in the coverage of the remnants of D&RGW's far-flung narrow-gauge empire in Colorado.

But the real story lies west of Grand Junction, where merchandise, lumber products, perishables and piggyback shipments were added to the area's considerable mineral traffic and the few remaining passenger trains operated during the latter years of D&RGW ownership. As with many enterprises, circumstances are always changing and despite its own good management and customer-oriented operations, the D&RGW was not always in control of its own fate.

One by one the needed connections were eliminated until the D&RGW was forced to cast its lot with a weakened Southern Pacific. This would prove to be a short-lived partnership and as the 20th century drew to a close, new owner Union Pacific finally got its wish of killing off the D&RGW once and for all.

Today, some of the lines covered in this volume see no UP trains at all on a regular basis, but the pictures and stories herein provide a look back to better days, when the Rio Grande was indeed the Jewel of the Wasatch.

The Complete History of the Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 Locomotives. By the 1920s, the legendary narrow-gauge system of the Denver & Rio Grande Western had shrunk to a third of the railroad's total trackage, and most of its locomotives were worn out.

Yet, traffic was heavy on some parts of the line and growing, and standard gauging the lines made little economic sense. And so the long-time Baldwin customer turned to the Philadelphia firm for 10 new narrow gauge, outside-frame Mikados.

Designated K-36 (Mikado, 36,200 lbs. of tractive effort), these beefy Baldwins were soon hauling freight over the four percent grades of Cumbres and Marshall passes and indeed, system-wide. Fast forward almost a century later, and nine of the locomotives still exist and eight are in service on the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroads.

Truly a remarkable record of service and why the K-36 is beloved by railfans and the crewmen who ran them. Author Jerry Day spent over 40 years compiling information and over 300 photographs, maps, track folios, drawings and diagrams, including a three-page foldout drawing by Mike McKenzie for this volume.

In addition, this 224-page hardcover book includes the D&RGW purchase of the K-36s and changes made to the lines to accommodate them, the operational history on the lines they ran, and accounts of K-36 snow fighting operations, special passenger runs, wrecks, movie trains, locomotive modifications and changes, and a section on the K-36s as they operate today on the C&TS and D&S railroads.

This title includes an appendix with the complete D&RGW/Baldwin specs for the locomotives.

Thirty years in the making, this new hardcover publication tells the complete story of these fascinating logging locomotives. Presented in construction number order, the articulated engines are covered individually in great detail with statistics and full histories that document each locomotive from the day it left Baldwin's sprawling Eddystone, Pennsylvania, factory to its ultimate disposition.

Between 1909 and 1937, the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, produced 44 specialized locomotives that were either built for, or later transitioned to, the rigors of hauling raw logs on railroads where the grades were steep and the curves many.

While all of these locomotives were built as articulated they varied greatly in design and appearance. Most were built as compound articulateds (Mallets) but two companies, Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and the Uintah Railway, received simple articulateds.

Water carrying methods were also wide-ranging. While most were built as tank locomotives others were equipped with a separate tender. Furthering the variations from as-built configurations, several of the tank locomotives were later converted by removing the side or semi-saddle tanks and adding a conventional tender.

While most of the logging articulateds toiled away in relative obscurity, several gained acclaim for their well-traveled longevity. Remarkably, ten of the locomotives have survived and several of those remain active over a century after their construction.

Beyond the exhaustively researched text, Timber Titans: Baldwin's Articulated Logging Locomotives features 455 Black and White and Color photographs that have been painstakingly restored to their original appearance.

All have been reproduced in high resolution with many presented full-page. Additionally, two full-color drawings, four three-dimensional renderings, and an original oil painting for the cover, were all commissioned specifically for this 256-page volume.
