Among the best-known model railroads in the world, George Sellios' HO scale Franklin & South Manchester has been covered extensively in the model railroad press. George has been the proprietor of Fine Scale Miniatures, a Producer//of highly detailed HO structure kits, since 1965. He began building the Franklin & South Manchester in 1985, and his progress ever since has been remarkable for both its quantity and superb quality.

This book, in print continuously since 1991, documents the first parts of the layout to be completed, the major cities of Manchester & Dovertown. In addition to more than 80 beautiful color photographs by Dave Frary, the book includes a track plan, and the text and captions feature many how-to tips and techniques.

In 1959 the Southern Pacific Railroad found itself in need of higher horsepower diesel locomotives to move their increasing freight traffic across the Sierras. As American locomotive manufactures could not meet the SP requirements the company began looking overseas.

In Munich Germany they found that Krauss Maffei, a respected locomotive builder, was producing diesel-hydraulic locomotives rated at 4000 horsepower. Southern Pacific and KM Hydraulics is the story of the building of these locomotives in Germany and of operating them in the United States. Robert J. Zenk working with KM and SP records, first-person accounts and a mechanical study of the sole surviving unit has authored an interesting history of the rise and fall of the hydraulic locomotives on the Southern Pacific.

There are detailed studies of each the 21 SP locomotives, the use of 9010 as the SP camera car and the locomotive's rebirth at the Niles Canyon Railway. This 300-page landscape book contains over 80 drawings, some 300 black/white and color photos many of which have never been published.

The Western Division of the Southern Pacific, historically extending from Sacramento to Oakland and San Jose, and with lines to Fresno, the Napa Valley, and over Altamont Pass, was a crucible of California operations.

Headquartered at the famous Oakland Pier (or Mole) and dispatching hundreds of passenger and freight trains daily in its heyday, this division was in many ways the vortex of SP in the West. With its ferry connection to San Francisco, and train departures to all parts of the SP system, the Oakland Pier was at the center.

The history, construction and operation of the division are presented in this broad compilation by Southern Pacific authority John Signor. As with all his SP historical works, the coverage is thorough and detailed, with many specifics drawn from operating personnel.

At the same time, the outstanding Signor maps we have come to expect, and voluminous photographic illustration from Southern Pacific files as well as from many amateur photographers, enrich the story. Signor has also created an original oil painting for the dust jacket and frontispiece.

In January 1975, Southern Pacific took delivery of its last General Electric U33C locomotive, considering this model's dismal maintenance record on the SP, observers could reasonably expect never again to see new GE locomotives on this railroad.Just three years later, however, GE came roaring back with their answer to Electro-Motive's GP40-2, the B30-7, and SP was first in line to buy a sample set.

Ultimately, the SP/SSW was to buy 110 B30-7 and another 20 B36-7 locomotives. Slipped in among these high-horsepower units were fifteen B23-7 locomotives delivered in 1980. In 1987-89, 95 new B39 and Dash 8 Techno-Toasters were added to the roster, along with 195 GP60s from GM Locomotive Group. Once a tractive effort railroad,the SP was re-inventing itself as a cross-country intermodal conveyor belt in competition with the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe.At the same time, control of the SP migrated to Rio Grande Industries, then gearing up for a boom in transportation of Colorado-mined coal for power plants.

GE was again able to meet the needs of the combined Rio Grande-SP, first with the comfort cab Dash 9-44CW (direct current) six-axle locomotive and, finally, with the dramatic capstone to the Southern Pacific diesel roster of 279 AC4400CW diesels-delivered in the short span of seven months in 1995. In all, 620 modern General Electric diesel units were delivered to the SP and the Cotton Belt between 1978 and 1995.Their story is told in Volume 19, in 144 pages with 250 photographs.

Each delivery phase of each GE model is given its own chapter. While GE locomotives were not very popular in the resale market, many are documented in the popular Graduates' chapter. Successor Union Pacific had dozens of early former SP B-boats rebuilt to green 21st-Century switchers, as well as converting dozens more into remote-control radio cars.

Their stories are documented in these pages. This nifty historical work is about a short line railroad that has operated in northern Wisconsin for many years. The MT&W served the logging industry and connected with the Milwaukee Road and Soo Line railroads north of Merrill, Wisconsin. As an historical work, most photographs are in black & white.

More Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge is a collection of 88 articles by Harry W. Brunk that originally appeared in the bi-monthly magazine, NARROW GAUGE & SHORT LINE GAZETTE. It continues the story told in the author's first book, Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge, of his HOn3 scale model railroad.

He based his Union Central & Northern Layout on the Clear Creek District of the 3-foot-gauge Colorado & Southern Railroad that ran from Golden, Colorado, to just beyond Silver Plume. Although this book tells the story of the author's layout, it is not a how-to-do-it book. Rather it is a book of inspiration and motivation the author has an infectious enthusiasm for his modeling and his subject.

Thus, More Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge is also a history book-modeling the C&S as it was in the late 1920s and early 1930s required a great deal of research. The history of the area is discussed in the text and reflected in the accurate modeling not only of the railroad and its equipment, but also of the houses, churches, mines, and businesses along the line.

Each of the 35 classes of cabooses from the predecessor railroads that made up Conrail are presented. Often prior paint schemes and then Conrail paint schemes are shown. There are usually 3-4 photographs representing each class. Some classes have floor diagrams as part of the short chapter. A table for each class shows which cabooses were on the roster for April 1, 1976, June 6, 1981, and April 8, 1986.

Conrail was formed just before the end of the caboose era which will make this title more interesting as the predecessor railroads of Conrail were from the caboose era. As with all early Conrail operations, the many paint schemes of the cabooses, cars and locomotives make for a great color book. Plus add in the roster of over 2,500 cabooses, this will be a great reference title, too.

The Garbely Publishing Company has partnered with The Conrail HS to produce the definitive guide to Conrail cabooses. Authored by GPCo (and CRHS) president Rudy Garbely with contributions from The CRHS staff, this book will include all 35 classes of Conrail cabooses, complete with the histories of each class and stories from Conrail employees that worked on them.

This book also contains information on cars that were destined for the Conrail roster but never operated on Conrail. The book includes over 600 color photographs, 28 original Conrail car diagrams, and detailed roster entries for over 2,500 cabooses. All author royalties from the sale of this book are being donated to The Conrail HS.

The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway was well described by its slogan, Around--Not Thru Chicago. For most of a century, it was owned by United States Steel and was a critical freight conduit for both U.S. Steel's Gary Works and its South Chicago Works but also served many other shippers along its 130-mile line.

In addition, it interchanged with fully 35 railroads around Chicago, carriers from the north, west, east and south, making it a busy interchange and transfer road also. The focal points of operations on this 130-mile railroad were the two major yards at East Joliet and Gary (Kirk Yard). Locomotive servicing as well as heavy freight switching typified these facilities, and both local freight service and inter-road transfer runs operated from these yards.

Along with a complete railroad history, the steam locomotive roster is illustrated and presented in this book, along with the same information for the diesel era. Probably the most distinctive signature motive power of the EJ&E was its Baldwin center-cab transfer diesels, of which they owned 27 units, more than all other railroads combined.

This fine Volume of history, enriched with 230 photographs (93 in color), most never before published, and 12 maps and drawings, along with detailed equipment histories and several summary chapters about EJ&E freight cars, is the most complete account of the history and operation of the EJ&E ever published.

Rail historians and modelers, especially those interested in Chicago-area railroads, will be enthralled with this book, but the many fans of main line railroading will find it interesting and enjoyable too. Pat Dorin, a well-known rail historian, worked for the EJ&E at one time, and has drawn on company records and employee interviews for this history of the road.

This is the first of two volumes the author has written. This book covers the history and operations of what was the classic Plains Division, with 788.1 miles of main and branch line extending from the yard at Waynoka, Oklahoma, to the east end of Clovis, New Mexico, via Amarillo, Texas. It also covers the Borger, Buffalo, Clinton, Dumas, Shattuck and Skellytown Districts. The second volume will cover the Panhandle Division.

In late 1907, Santa Fe opened the Belen Cut Off and the bulk of transcontinental freight traffic was soon routed over the new Southern Mainline. Initially grain was the primary on line source of revenue, but soon oil was discovered in Western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle and Santa Fe built branch lines to reach this new traffic. Not known for its passenger traffic, the last passenger train was discontinued on the division in 1971. On the other hand, the Plains Division saw increasing volumes of freight traffic over the years. In the late 1970s, traffic had grown to an average of 26 trains daily on the mainline. After 1985 intermodal traffic increased to the point that within a few years over 90 trains passing over the division in a 24-hour day was not uncommon.

The story of the Plains Division is told by a veteran railroader who, with camera in hand, retired with over 45 years of service on the Santa Fe.
