Softcover, 162 pages, standard portrait format, 190 photographs with 39 in Color, 31 maps, 68 drawings and illustrations including plans of vinegar and pickle cars. This second edition includes 22 additional pages of material including photos of early Chicago and outside of Chicago pickle-making.
Here is a book featuring a once-upon-a-time source of traffic for America's railroads. If these products move on the rails today, they are packaged in glass and boxed and move in trailers or containers.
This title features both pickle and vinegar companies which of course can be related to each other. The major players in the industry, their history, operations and freight cars are detailed. Special attention is given to Michigan and Wisconsin, with charts of where cucumbers were grown, cities with pickle and vinegar factories and their relationship to Chicago-at one time the leading maker of pickles and vinegar.
Contents:
- Introduction, pp. IV-V, Early Chicago Pickle Industry, pp. 1–26, Pickle Industry Outside of Chicago, pp. 27–42, The Manufacture of Pickles, pp. 43–64, Pickle Transport, pp. 65–90, Vinegar History and Manufacturer's, pp. 91–110, More Vinegar Manufacturers, pp. 111–118, Vinegar Transport, pp. 119–142, Charts, Tables and Plans, pp. 143–162. Softcover, 325 pages, standard portrait format, 280 photographs (46 in Color), 128 maps, and 20 illustrations.
This is not a picture book, but a history book that includes many photographs. This book traces the history of the railroads that formed the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal from the LaSalle & Chicago Railroad projected in 1867 to the Chicago & Great Western, which together with the Chicago & Calumet Terminal formed the Chicago Terminal Transfer, which became the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal.
The Baltimore & Ohio is followed from its entry into Chicago in 1873 to the formation of CSX in 1980. The author had access to a wide variety of materials from the Baltimore & Ohio HS, Soo Line Historical & Technical Society, Chicago & North Western HS and much more. Unlike most railroads, the B&OCT was not built from point A to point B and considered complete.
It evolved slowly, adding and subtracting trackage as it was needed. Each of the lines making up the B&OCT was documented along with the reasons they were built and, in some cases, not built. Except for minor changes, the line was complete by 1900, but lurking in the future was its second receivership.
After a bidding war between Hill for the Burlington and Harriman for the B&O, it emerged as the B&OCT in 1910. Maps are an important part to any history and this book includes 128 maps. There are 78 pages of color photographs and 325 pages of text. Photographers include Burt Mall, Phil Weibler and John Szwajkart, all well-known Chicago-area railroad photographers.
Chapter 16 recounts two inspection trips taken in 1952 and 1955 that includes the original agendas provided by the railroad with photos added to illustrate what they might have seen. Chapter 17 includes a General Outline of the B&OCT from 1935, with maps of every segment circa 1966. The 1956 B&O Training Manual is reproduced.
It shows all the tracks and industries served with miles from Grand Central and the car capacity of sidings and yards. Finally there is a locomotive roster, a diesel roster, bibliography and index, 323 pages in total. Whether you are interested in Chicago railroads, Chicago history or a B&O aficionado, this book is must-have reading.

Since the railroad era began, New York State's Capital Region has been an area of convergence -- most famously for the New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, and the Boston & Maine. However, from the 1960s through the 1990s, this area underwent a lot of change. Mergers and abandonments left the Capital Region railroad scene scaled back at the end of this era. Author Tim Stockwell -- who was a child in the 1980s and 1990s -- witnessed a lot of this change but had not yet picked up a camera. Through the lenses of photographers like Jim Connor, Jeff Plant, Jeremy Plant, John Sesonske, Gordy Smith, and Jack Wright, Tim takes us on a journey through the Capital Region, with special attention paid to lines that no longer exist.
Volume 2 starts in Albany, then takes a geographical tour south and west of the city.

The Garbely Publishing Company, spiral-bound softcover, 242 pages, 6 x 9 in.
, B&W.The Union Pacific Railroad's dining cars were renowned for their service and food quality. The UP's well-trained chefs and waiters provided some of the world's finest cuisine while rolling along the eastern seaboard's steel highways. The procedures and, more importantly, the recipes used to provide that service were compiled into a single volume for the staff's reference and guidance on board the train. This exact reprint of the UP's Dining Car Cookbook and Service Instructions dates from circa 1955, after the Milwaukee Road began handling UP trains between Chicago and Omaha.
It is reproduced from an original copy in The Garbely Publishing Company's collection, which includes updates through the end of UP passenger service in 1971. From uniquely exotic 1950s recipes to those that are familiar to the modern reader, this book contains hundreds of recipes that were originally prepared aboard a UP dining car, including sauces, salads, sandwiches, entrees, sides, and desserts.Simplicity was key aboard a rolling kitchen with limited space and ingredients, and the UP's signature dishes were designed to provide the flavor of a five-star restaurant with limited expense, time, and effort - all traits that translate well to home cooking!
With many of the recipes written for cooking in bulk for a train full of passengers, this book also makes the perfect companion to any event from an upscale dinner party to a backyard barbecue. This historic book is a must-have for both the avid culinary historian and the casual railroad enthusiast.

Steve Goen's second book on Texas passenger train service features the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific. In this book he features the operations of 14 different Rock Island passenger trains that once operated in the Lone Star State. The Rock Island had three major routes that crossed Texas. The Golden State Route cut across the most northern part of Texas at about a 45 degree angle on its way from Chicago to Arizona and California.
The Choctaw Route also crossed the most northern part of Texas on its way from Memphis to a connection with itself at Tucumcari, New Mexico. The last route, the Twin Star Route, ran north to south entering Texas from Oklahoma and connecting Fort Worth, Dallas and Houston. This was the most prominent Rock Island route serving Texas.
Chapters include the Graham Branch, the ACR Line, and trains such as the Short Line Flyer, Arizona Limited, Texas Rocket, Choctaw Rocket, Memphis-Californian, Oklahoma Rocket, Fort Worth to El Reno RDCs (rail diesel cars), Choctaw Rockette (an RDC run), Twin Star Rocket, Imperial, Cherokee and the Golden State.
The most prominent Rock Island train serving Texas was named for Minnesota, the "North Star State", and Texas, the "Lone Star State", as the Twin Star Rocket. This train was one of the most glamorous passenger trains to have ever crossed the Mid-West. Operating daily between Minneapolis and Houston, the Twin Star was one of the most famous, yet little known streamliners that served Texas.
The chapter on the Twin Star Rocket alone includes 51 extremely rare B&W and Color photographs between the trains' premiere in January 1945 and its final run in September 1966.

Steve Goen has been the author of a number of popular railroad book titles focusing on Texas and the Southwest published by Four Ways West Publications. Steve is now publishing his own titles, and this is the first of them about railroad passenger service in Texas. The second title he is working on is on the Rock Island in Texas which should be available soon.
Cotton Belt's passenger service ended long before the beginning of Amtrak in 1971. The Cotton Belt didn't have the presence in Texas that its parent, the Southern Pacific, or other prominent Texas-serving railroads such as the Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific did. This book fills a need for readers who want to know more about this lesser-known passenger service.
This title covers the history of the passenger service from an era of B&W photography and very little color photography as the trains stopped running many years before Amtrak. There are color photographs, but they are only about 10% of the photo selection, though. Many trains were of a branch line nature and 'doodlebugs' are quite prominently featured.
Maps and Timetable reproductions are in color as they were back in the day. There are some schedules presented as well as some press articles to complete the book.

Expect that the titles from this publisher will have minor cosmetic flaws. Books may have some scuffing on the dust jackets, minor tears in the jackets and small bumps on the corners. This is a small budget operation. You are not buying the books for their appearance, but for the information. Using a dust jacket cover will help their appearance.

Southern California's history and economic development were closely aligned with the Pacific Electric Railway, organized 1901-1902 by Henry Huntington and carried on by a new corporation after 1911 of the same name, owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad.
This book addresses the period from 1911 to 1953 of the "new" Pacific Electric Railway that operated electric-powered passenger and freight trains in southern California. The co-authors had access to extensive photograph files illustrating Pacific Electric cars and their operating environment and selected the best for use in this book.
Two major goals of this book is to illustrate all of the major classes of cars and locomotives operated by the Pacific Electric after 1911 and to provide detailed, informative picture captions that can both stand on their own and also provide the seeds for future research.

This title is published by Shade Tree Books but apparently the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society is selling the first copies. This is both an historical account with many Black and White photographs and a pictorial with many large Black and White and Color photographs.
All eras of the Southern Pacific are presented in color: steam locomotives, early diesels, later diesels, MetroLink, and Consolidated Rock Products which is part of the Other Railroads in the Valley chapter.
There are some track diagrams, depot plans (though very small, each one fills a page), and tables of customers and other data. Overall this is a very detailed work. Located north of the Los Angeles basin, the San Fernando Valley was home to a portion of both the San Joaquin main line and the Coast main line, and the entire Burbank Branch.
The author traces the history of Southern Pacific in the area from the 1850s when it just an idea, the construction of both main lines and the branch line, the operational history of the railroad, and the end of the Southern Pacific in 1996.
Iconic locations such as Glendale station, Burbank Junction, and the three tunnels in Chatsworth through Santa Susana Pass were the stomping grounds of both famous and unknown photographers. Many of the photographs are published for the first time.
The steam era covers little 4-4-0s to massive cab-forwards. The diesel era covers the freight and passenger locomotives that dieselized the railroad to the end of the Southern Pacific with SD70Ms and AC4400s.
One chapter is dedicated to other railroads in the valley including Amtrak, Metrolink, quarry railroads and two monorails. Included are thirty-two pages of full-color photography from Daylight locomotives to the last days of scarlet and gray.

This long-awaited book from noted Southern Pacific locomotive authority Bob Church covers all the ten-coupled types, from El Gubernator of the 1880s and the Texas & New Orleans 2-10-0s, to all the 2-10-2s and 4-10-2s. Extensive research has yielded the full details about SP's experiments with valve gear on 2-10-2 number 3769, and equally full details about the design and construction of the three-cylinder locomotives with Gresley valve gear in the SP Class 4-10-2s.
Typical of Church's in-depth information, it has many unpublished photographs, some in color, and includes line profiles, maps, and locomotive/tender plans in its 24 chapters, and also features a chapter on tenders by Arnold Menke. Exhaustive information on history, operations and maintenance is also presented.
No SP fan should be without this book. Signature Press, hardcover with jacket, 534 pages, 795 B&W and color photographs, maps and graphics, bibliography, index.

The practice of painting advertisements on the freight cars of shippers and car owners' dates well back into the 19th century. But in the 1920s, leasing companies realized they could contract with shippers to pass back usage payments beyond some agreed minimum. This led to an explosion of car leasing and, as this book amply demonstrates, a corresponding explosion of billboard decoration of refrigerator cars.
Railroad objections, especially to the usage payment rebates, led to hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission, which, taking effect in 1937, banned most of the leasing practices which had generated the car leasing bonanza. After World War II, a restrained billboard style made a modest comeback.Car-side advertising was only a detail of that ICC decision.
But because it was the basis for a remarkable diversity of refrigerator car paint schemes in the era, the photographs of these cars have long held an interest for historians, railfans, and Model Railroader's.Thoroughly documented here are hundreds of these paint schemes, together with details of the leasing companies and car builders associated with the individual cars.
More than 440 photographs, most previously unpublished, enrich this book. Even a modest amount of color information was available and is included. The authors, both recognized authorities on railroad freight car history, have done a superb job of collecting and organizing the information presented here.
The book is sure to appeal to modelers and to many who are interested in railroad history.

More than 25 years have passed since Jared Harper's pioneer work on Raton Pass was first published. This is a second edition of this important work, not only to bring it up to date, and to take advantage of recent trends in photo restoration and printing technology, but to expand on the original with the considerable amount of material that has come to light on the subject in the intervening years, especially on the coal mining industry that surrounded the pass from the beginning through the middle 1950s.
As the highest point on the vast Santa Fe Railway system, and possessing one of the steepest main line grades in the United States, Raton Pass attracted pioneer railroad photographers like Otto C. Perry, Richard Kindig, Jackson Thode, Les Logue, Clayton Tinkham, Joe Schick, and Preston George who documented the parade of trains over Raton Mountain in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
Raton was also noted for operating many more passenger trains and streamliners than freight trains, as an easier grade, via Amarillo, Texas, and Belen, New Mexico, was used by the majority of freight trains.
Triple headers of steam engines were not uncommon. Freights usually had three or four engines on each train, a double header on the front end, and one or two pushers at the rear. Today the railroad is owned by the State of New Mexico and faces an uncertain future, but the history an operation of Santa Fe's line over Raton Mountain remains, and is indeed the stuff that legends are made of.

Railroads of the Hudson River Valley is Bill Mc Bride's first book but railfans will recognize his name from photo credits and articles he has had published in Trains, Railfan & Railroad, TRP, Railpace, The Short Line and Railroads Illustrated. His photographs have also graced the pages of other authors books when they required high quality photographs.
In Railroads of the Hudson River Valley the author takes you on a scenic tour of one of the most beautiful and famous river valleys in the country. Railroads line both banks of the river and during the past twenty-nine years Bill Mc Bride has climbed mountains, hills, rocks and trees to get spectacular scenic photographs of various railroad trains, both freight and passenger, that called the valley home.
The intrepid photographer has also waded into the river and walked out onto frozen ice shelves to further his documentation of the railroads. In addition to the 244 color photographs, you will find an account of a 1927 train wreck at Iona Island that claimed four lives, stories about the history and origin of Iona Island, Bear Mountain State Park, Bannermans Island and Dicks Castle.
Also covered is the history of a very ambitious railroad that was started but never built. The author tells his story of the Railroads of the Hudson River Valley in a first-person narrative that shares his adventures and misadventures in making so many unique photographs. The reader will get the sense that they are sitting with the author as he goes through his photographic collection.
Many of the photographs presented in the book cannot be taken today for various reasons ranging from trees that have grown, buildings that have been constructed and 911 restrictions. Tom Nemeth, the editor and publisher of Railpace Magazine, did the layout and editing for the book. The book was printed by GRIT Printing of Montoursville, Pa. who are responsible for the outstanding quality of photographs in Railpace.2009 celebrates the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first voyage on the river that would eventually be named for him and Railroads of the Hudson River Valley fits deliciously into that celebration!

Industry City, Volume 1: Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal and New York Dock Railway is a richly detailed exploration of the last independent rail-marine operations on New York City’s waterfront. Drawing on years of research and the collections of noted historians Jay Bendersky, Philip Goldstein, and the late Benjamin Schaeffer, this volume chronicles the intertwined histories of the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal (BEDT) and the New York Dock Railway (NYD), two railroad operations that defined industrial Brooklyn From the bustling Kent Avenue yards and Pidgeon Street terminal to the piers of Red Hook and the warehouses of Fulton Terminal.
Through detailed histories, photographs, maps, and rosters, Industry City, Vol. 1 immerses readers in the last bits of industrial railroading from just before and throughout Conrail merger days, which changed the railroad scene in New York Harbor overnight. The 1970s merger that united BEDT and NYD under one banner produced the landmark “New York Dock Agreement,” a defining labor decision still cited today. This first volume in the Industry City series sets the stage for future books exploring other New York short lines — including New York Cross Harbor, the South Brooklyn Railway, Long Island Rail Road, and other New York City railroad operations — while preserving the legacy of an era when railroads, tugboats, and warehouses worked side by side to keep America’s largest city moving.
