5 x 11 in., B&W and Color images. In 1868, the Buffalo Creek Railroad was incorporated as the first terminal railroad in the United States. Designed to tap into the growing grain milling business and Lake Erie commercial traffic, this five-mile railroad, concentrated entirely in Buffalo, New York, became the busiest terminal railroad of its size by the early 20th century.

Even though the railroad's service became synonymous with Buffalo's grain milling and flour industry, it also served a significant amount of the chemical and oil business in the area. While its operations were locally confined, the Buffalo Creek was widely known in the railroading community by its vast fleet of 40-foot boxcars, used to transport Buffalo's grain products to locations as far away as Mexico City and Vancouver.

This book covers the railroad's inception through the end of its steam era and into the early diesel era.

The El Paso & Southwestern was the largest single corporate acquisition that the Southern Pacific ever made - a century ago, when rail mergers were popular. Even though the EP&SW corporation disappeared in 1924, its steam loco- motives became an active part of the Southern Pacific roster, a few lasting into the 1950s.

The EP&SW along with its parent, Phelps-Dodge Corporation, spurred the growth of Arizona and New Mexico beginning with copper mining and smelting and later coal mining and timber harvesting. The author, Vernon J.

Glover, I consider 'Mr. New Mexico Railroads' as he has collected much information regarding the state over the years. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, copper was a growth industry in the United States. The rapid growth of copper production and the surrounding towns in southeastern Arizona made it clear that wagon freight to and from main line railheads was no longer a sufficient means of transportation - there was a need for more direct rail connections to the eastern markets.

Fruitless discussions with the Southern Pacific led to building the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad, an independent railroad, to El Paso, Texas, financed entirely from cash reserves of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. In the meantime, the El Paso & Northeastern, a line not affiliated with either railroad, was building northward from El Paso, up through the Territory of New Mexico, creating new towns as it went along the way.

In 1905, the two railroads were joined and their operations merged as rapidly as possible. The EP&SW story is told in three parts: first, the origins of the western part of the system, second, connecting El Paso with the coal mines of Dawson, New Mexico, and third, the merger of the eastern and western lines in 1905 into a unified system.

Throughout its story, strong personalities influenced the activities of the system: James Douglas of the Copper Queen at Bisbee, Arizona, Charles Bishop Eddy and John Arthur Eddy, guiding the EP&NE, Attorney William Ashton Hawkins who, along with Douglas, influenced the merged EP&SW system until its sale to the Southern Pacific in 1924.

Signed by both authors and numbered. Here is Volume 2 of the two Volume set about the Union Pacific 4-12-2 steam locomotive type. This unusual locomotive wheel arrangement, only found in the United States on the Union Pacific (hence the name 'Union Pacific Type'), was literally hated by some Union Pacific managers.

This three-cylinder design pushed the limits of locomotive design theory and the railroad's own clearance and other mechanical restrictions. Inside this book is the story of the design, fabrication, modification and operation of these 88 locomotives which lasted on the Union Pacific until the end of steam locomotive operations.

This is not a picture book, but a history book that includes many photographs. This book traces the history of the railroads that formed the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal from the LaSalle & Chicago Railroad projected in 1867 to the Chicago & Great Western, which together with the Chicago & Calumet Terminal formed the Chicago Terminal Transfer, which became the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal.

The Baltimore & Ohio is followed from its entry into Chicago in 1873 to the formation of CSX in 1980. The author had access to a wide variety of materials from the Baltimore & Ohio HS, Soo Line Historical & Technical Society, Chicago & North Western HS and much more. Unlike most railroads, the B&OCT was not built from point A to point B and considered complete.

It evolved slowly, adding and subtracting trackage as it was needed. Each of the lines making up the B&OCT was documented along with the reasons they were built and, in some cases, not built. Except for minor changes, the line was complete by 1900, but lurking in the future was its second receivership.

After a bidding war between Hill for the Burlington and Harriman for the B&O, it emerged as the B&OCT in 1910. Maps are an important part to any history and this book includes 128 maps. There are 78 pages of color photographs and 325 pages of text. Photographers include Burt Mall, Phil Weibler and John Szwajkart, all well-known Chicago-area railroad photographers.

Chapter 16 recounts two inspection trips taken in 1952 and 1955 that includes the original agendas provided by the railroad with photos added to illustrate what they might have seen. Since the railroad era began, New York State's Capital Region has been an area of convergence -- most famously for the New York Central, Delaware & Hudson, and the Boston & Maine. However, from the 1960s through the 1990s, this area underwent a lot of change. Mergers and abandonments left the Capital Region railroad scene scaled back at the end of this era. Author Tim Stockwell -- who was a child in the 1980s and 1990s -- witnessed a lot of this change but had not yet picked up a camera. This is a pictorial with over 400 roster and action photographs of SP Pacific Lines steam during World War II and the dozen years afterward as the roster declined. Almost all of the pictures show engines at work or at least ready to run.

There is a condensed roster and some text, but the main effort was to present caption information that would explain what is going on in the picture - not just what and when, but why. Photographic examples are included of almost every class of Pacific Lines steam engine that operated in this time span, with chapters on each wheel arrangement.

Many of the images were made from negatives that are sixty or even seventy years old, and yet the photograph reproduction is quite good.
