The Old Reliable's passenger service was neither deluxe nor state-of-the-art, and its feature trains all originated on someone else's railroad. However, the Louisville & Nashville offered a comfortable, friendly service that connected the major gateways in the East and Midwest with the South.Hardcover with jacket, 128 pages, Color images with captions.

The Western Pacific was an interesting railroad in terms of its history, operations, facilities and equipment. It earned the respect of many perhaps because of its David vs. Goliath image as it competed head to head against the vastly larger Southern Pacific or in part to its attractive orange and silver locomotives, or the California Zephyr and its run through the Feather River Canyon, or even to the lowly boxcars, many of which were adorned with a colorful feather logo.

Come along for a look at the colorful WP with outstanding photographs not only of the fabled California Zephyr equipment, but heavyweight passenger cars, general freight service cars, TOFC flats and trailers, maintenance of way equipment, and finally finishing with cabooses.

The Northern Pacific Railway entered the diesel era with a large fleet of modern steam locomotives, but gradually and then more rapidly, made the transition to diesel-electric motive power. Covering in detail, all of the NP's diesels: the first-generation switchers, the early road units, and the postwar road-switchers.

The more powerful and technologically advanced second-generation units such as U25C, the U28C, the SD-45, and the U33C units are presented. Of the many books Golden Spike stocks, I read this one from cover to cover.

It is an excellent book not only for the Northern Pacific, but for what the railroad mechanical departments experienced in selecting models from the many-at the time-diesel builders. It was especially humorous to read about the 'new' Baldwin road switcher that as the paint wore away revealed factory demonstrator colors!

Ice houses were a new concept when the country's railroads finally began to use them to replenish the ice necessary to keep their customers' perishable items from spoiling in transit. Railroads were reluctant users of refrigerated cars in the first place, but large shippers such as meat packers, breweries, and produce suppliers demanded they use this method to ship perishable goods.

In Colorado Ice Houses the author uses photographs, drawings and maps to skillfully explore this unique subject.

The New Haven Railroad had a well-deserved reputation for being an innovator. Despite its chronic economic difficulties, the NH's leadership somehow always managed to position it on the leading edge of railroad technology of the time.

One of the New Haven's greatest technological claims to fame is that it was a leader in the field of railroad electrification. Presented here are equipment and locations of the NH's Electrified Zone. This book is based on the collection of photographs owned by Robert A.

Up Clear Creek on the Narrow Gauge is a collection of 54 articles by the same title that originally appeared in the bi-monthly magazine, NARROW GAUGE AND SHORT-LINE GAZETTE (also published by Benchmark Publications). It is the story of the author's H0n3 scale model railroad. He based his Union Central and Northern layout on the Clear Creek District of the 3-foot gauge Colorado & Southern Railroad that ran from Golden, Colorado, to just beyond Silver Plume.

Although this book tells the story of the author's layout, it is not a "how-to-do-it" book. Rather it is a book of inspiration and motivation - the author has an infectious enthusiasm for his modeling and his subject, thus Up Clear Creek is also a history book - modeling the C&S as it was in the late 1920s and early 1930s required a great deal of research. The history of the area is discussed in the text and reflected in the accurate modeling not only of the railroad and its equipment, but also of the houses, churches, mines, and businesses along the line.

Whether you are a model railroader, a railfan, or just curious about the intimate details of the Clear Creek Canyon area of Colorado, you will find something of interest in this book. Modelers will find inspiration and techniques that are applicable whatever railroad they model, be it Eastern, Western, narrow or standard gauge, logging or mining.

Some years ago, C&OHS did a special book of Gene Huddleston’s Black-&-White photos. We are now publishing some of his best color images for the first time! Gene got his 35mm camera in 1957. We have selected a group of about 300 of his color slide images and placed them in this book.

Section I deals with the years 1957-1975 roughly and comprises about 4/5ths of the book. Section II displays some of his later 1975-1990s photography.

Gene is recognized as the premier photographer/historian of C&O in the post- WWII era up until his death in 2011. His C&O pictures have appeared in scores of books, but few of his color images have been printed into book form. Morning Sun Publishing did some of his color work about 15 years ago. This book seeks to correct and supplement that. Though Gene did not begin color until after the end of steam, his early diesel photos are important, as is the fact that he visited locales that were not frequented by other railfans of the later era.

The book is printed on 100-pound paper to the highest standards. The photos are arranged in east-to-west order from Virginia to West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Background text tells something about each area and era.

The Lackawanna Electrics is a richly detailed chronicle of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad’s pioneering fleet of electric multiple-unit (MU) cars — an engineering marvel that defined suburban rail travel in northern New Jersey for more than five decades. From their debut in 1930 through their final years of service under NJ Transit in the 1980s, these dependable “electrics” carried countless commuters between Hoboken and the growing suburbs of Morris, Essex, and Somerset Counties.

Blending thorough research with vivid photography, this book explores every phase of the MU cars’ lives: their design and construction, their reliable performance through the Great Depression, World War II, and the Erie Lackawanna merger, and their graceful decline amid modernization and re-electrification. Featuring rare historical documents and over 150 images, The Lackawanna Electrics is both a tribute and a technical history of one of the most distinctive and enduring commuter car fleets ever to run in the United States — a true New Jersey icon remembered with affection by generations of riders and railfans alike.

This title covers a great range in railroad ownership and the subsequent changes in locomotive paint schemes. The Soo Line red and white paint scheme dominates the photo selection but there are also locomotive consists with former Milwaukee Road power and later the red with white lettering Soo Line.

The is a very comprehensive title on one type of Rio Grande narrow gauge car. There is much text here. I wish the photographs were larger, but that has probably already been done by other authors and publishers.

This is a pretty good history of the fleet. Rio Grande High-Side Gondolas is a must for Railfans and modelers interested in narrow gauge rolling stock. In spite of the author's quote in the introduction as "a brief, incomplete history," this book is anything but.

Dr. Rhine has chronicled these cars for decades and this is a detailed study of the Rio Grande's narrow gauge high-side gondolas. The book traces all the major classes of cars, from introduction to the railroad, through the many variants and permutations of the car type, to the end of their service lives.

These cars formed the backbone of the coal, mineral, and loose material transport and in so doing, had long and productive lives on the line with many examples still extant, including some in regular service as passenger cars on tourist and museum railroads.

The Santa Fe's and Rio Grande's main lines basically paralleled each other between Denver and Pueblo, the USRA forced the two to operate as a single double-track railroad. When the USRA handed the railroads back to private ownership, the ATSF and D&RGW decided to continue to operate the two lines as if they were a single double-track railroad shared with the C&S. From that time until the BNSF merger in 1995 the three involved railroads both cooperated and competed with one another.

Author Robert Walz explores the fascinating history of this cooperation among all three railroads from their beginnings in the Denver and Pueblo markets up to the BNSF merger.

The book is richly illustrated with track charts and over 250 period views (over 80 in color) including the work of Otto Petty as well as contemporary photographers.

Over the past two decades, author John Ham has produced several books about the New York Central Railroad in New York State. His most recent publication was the book about the Central's Main Line entitled From Grand Central to Albany. This title continues the tour of the New York Central main line, continuing west from Albany and Schenectady along the scenic Mohawk River Valley to Syracuse and on through the fertile farmlands of central New York to Rochester and finally, Buffalo. The focus of this book is on the New York Central's "Glory Years" using a multitude of fine steam and early diesel photographs taken along the Water Level Route by some of the most noted rail photographers of the 20th Century.

Using their original negatives and prints, they have been graciously loaned to the author by different Historical Societies and collectors. This 384-page volume contains not only superb New York Central photos, but images of the Central's Branch Lines, other connecting railroads and industries that were served by the Central in one capacity or another.

There are more than 650 images between the covers. We hope you will take this journey along the scenic Mohawk Valley with us and enjoy it as much as we have while researching and assembling this book.

This is my favorite era of American railroading. First-Generation diesels in their as delivered and later day paint schemes. Passenger trains carrying the mail, Alco PAs and EMD F-units.

Depots still well-maintained including those made out of wood. Unusual diesels now long-gone such as Southern Pacific's U50s and various Baldwin-made locomotives. There are a handful of Southern Pacific steam photographs such as a head-on shot of 4445 starting to leave Bakersfield with the depot in the background.

The Kaiser Steel ore-trains, Trona Railway, Plaster City narrow gauge, Pacific Electric, Santa Fe red-and-silver, 40-foot billboard boxcars, clean diesels and no graffiti. I personally missed this era and saw the remains later on.

I need a time machine to go back and experience it all. What a glorious railroad era! The photographs count approximates each railroad's presence in southern California.

First is Southern Pacific with Santa Fe as a close second. Union Pacific is a distant third place. Most pages have one large photograph with captions.

Other pages have two and a few pages three photographs. Some railfans wish they lived in southern California. Others were fortunate enough to have been born there.

Tom Gildersleeve, Gordon Glattenberg, and the late William H. "Hank" Mills are among the latter. The photographic trio began their exploration of the Southland in the early 1950s, when profound societal and technological change began to sweep the Golden State.

Beyond the Technicolor dreams Hollywood was sending around the world, citrus groves were steadily giving way to industrialization and suburban sprawl. An expanding web of freeways was turning trolleys into antiques, while colorful new diesel locomotives steadily took the reins from steam's iron horse.

Transition was in full flower, providing the authors with intriguing subject matter cast against a wide array of dramatic settings. At a time when most photographers documented the industry in black and white, Gildersleeve, Glattenberg, and Mills made Kodachrome their film of choice, opting for a medium that could realistically capture the full palette of their surroundings.

Popular publishing was predominantly a monochrome enterprise, providing few opportunities for color shooters beyond slide shows at private homes and railroad club meetings. It would be the mid-1970s before new technology allowed all three of the authors to reach a wider audience.

The decision to concentrate on color photography might be construed as an act of faith, with little reward beyond the satisfaction of a job well done. As this volume will attest, that faith has been rewarded on a grand scale.

Some 345 color images invite inspection, the majority of them being published for the first time. Focusing on the years between the mid-1950s and late 1960s, Southland takes the reader on a wide-ranging tour of the region between Bakersfield and the Mexican border.

Six chapters and eight detailed maps, with comprehensive captions by award-winning photojournalist Ted Benson, convey the excitement of Southern California railroading in the golden age of Kodachrome. Over 250 action-packed pages depict the full sweep of activity, from Santa Fe Alco PAs and Union Pacific gas-turbine electrics battling Cajon Pass, to Southern Pacific 4449 in the days when the famed steam locomotive was just another Daylight 4-8-4.

Red and yellow trolley cars thread the bustling streets of Los Angeles, contrasting with trios of GP9s roaming the wilds of Carrizo Gorge. From busy double-track mountain main lines to thrice-weekly locals in the Mojave Desert, there's something for every reader in the pages of Southland.

, color photographs and maps. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was built through the Rocky Mountains, not around them. A tenacious rebel, the Rio Grande survived for more than a century as an independent railroad in a land of giants. At the end of the 20th century, the enduring memory of the Rio Grande is one of black and gold diesels thundering through smoky tunnels on a right-of-way blasted out of solid rock by construction engineers who didn't know the meaning of the word impossible.

The First Edition was published in 1994 and comprised 128 pages with 146 photos. The Second Edition includes 208 pages, 223 full-color photographs and nine lavishly illustrated maps. This new volume presents a retrospective of a railroad where words of description always fall short. In the pages of Rio Grande: Scenic Line of the World - Second Edition may be found all of the elements that made the Rio Grande the scenic wonder it was.

The evergreen mountains of La Veta Pass, the bare rock of the Royal Gorge, the golden aspen on Tennessee Pass, the multi-colored sandstone of Ruby and Bootlegger Canyons, the moonscape of the Utah desert, the majestic Wasatch Range, and the sheer ruggedness of the entire Moffat Road, are all here in one amazing volume.

Through acquisitions and mergers, Rio Grande slowly lost its personality to that of Southern Pacific, and later, Union Pacific. The images in this book help preserve the memory of the last years of the Rio Grande and perhaps provide some justification for the railroad’s bold claim of being the Scenic Line of the World.

The Georgetown, Breckenridge and Leadville Railway was incorporated in 1880 to merge with Colorado Central Railroad, build west to the mining camps in the Colorado mountains, connect with Denver, South Park and Pacific, and compete with the larger Denver & Rio Grande.

Built in 1883, the Loop was an engineering marvel of the day, solving the problem of linking the towns of Silver Plume and Georgetown (only two miles apart), but with more than 600 feet in elevation difference. The Loop was more than 4.6 miles of track, including two hairpin turns and a viaduct where the route looped 100 feet over itself within the narrow mountain valley.

This allowed the railroad grade to be traversed by conventional trains. In addition to serving the mines, the line proved a popular tourist destination. Indeed, the rebuilt Loop has hosted tens of thousands of riders each year since 1974. This new book details the history of the line until its abandonment in 1938.

This book was a massive project by the author and includes B&W photographs from the early days, Color photographs from the later days and color maps to help tell the story of Georgia-Pacific and its railroads.

ForestRails is a story of railroads and the role they played in the growth of Georgia-Pacific, a major forest products company. From the early beginnings, railroads have been absolutely essential in the delivery of raw materials and shipment of finished products of the forests.

Such was the case with Georgia-Pacific's railroads. Just as man does not live on bread alone, railroads could not survive without freight to haul. Thus it is necessary for this story to also tell the parallel stories of G-P's acquisitions that included the railroads.

This story is an important part of American business history. By 1900 lumbermen had recognized the efficiency of a steel wheel on a steel rail and the number of logging railroads grew rapidly. The coming of the railroads freed lumbermen from being tied to the riverbanks and dependency on weather conditions.

Railroad logging could be operated year-round with little or no interruptions from the weather. Railroads also made large areas of timber accessible that could not have been logged before. G-P's acquisitions have included 16 common-carrier short line railroads and five major private logging operations.

Each short line was a separate subsidiary company of Georgia-Pacific. Although governed by boards of directors, the short lines were separately operated at arms-length due to government regulations. The author does not purport to analyze the financial and economic aspects of the Georgia-Pacific railroads.

Although the railroads were profitable, it would be impossible to quantify the precise economic benefit of the railroads to G-P from financial statements alone. Instead, the operational characteristics of the railroads and, more importantly, their vital support of the logistics processes of the company; mills, plants, and distribution systems are explored in depth.

To be included in this story, a railroad must have been owned or operated by G-P at some time during its existence. The history of each railroad is then told from its beginning. Certain unique and creative arrangements for preserving rail service at mills on non-company railroads are also discussed.
