Softcover, 80 pages, 8.5 x 11 in., Color photographs. By George W. Hamlin with Photography by Matt Herson from the Matt Herson Collection.

This book is made up of a nice collection of sharp photographs printed on high-quality paper. There is a brief history of the PRR electrification, and the book moves on to the power starting with the DD1 motors. Then the freight-haulers are presented and then the famous GG1 including the 4800 painted in bicentennial colors.

About 30 percent of the book are pictures of GG1s in various locations and liveries. MU equipment gets 10 pages of coverage. Amtrak also makes the pages with E60CHs, Metroliners and Amfleet equipment. The EMD GM1 model and 2 pages of yellow maintenance-of-way motors finish the book.

This is more than a picture book. This book is about the railroad crossings of the Allegheny Mountains and therefore has a lot of text to it. The pictures augment the text rather than having a picture book with extensive captions. There a quite a few postcard reproductions and maps. 99 percent of the pictures are in color.

1937 Standard, Steel-Sheathed, Wood-Lined Box Car - Twenty Years of Improvements to the Original Design. This volume is part of a continuing series covering 20th century American box car designs. The 385-page article by Pat Wider centers on the improvements made to the Association of American Railroads 1937 Standard Box Car over a twenty-year period.

Growing up Lisbon, Iowa, Randy Williams was fascinated with trains. After watching and photographing the Chicago & North Western in his hometown, Randy secured a job with the railroad. Working as an engineer, Randy ran trains on the Iowa Division and the coal lines in Wyoming.

Randy never lost his love for railroads. He diligently traveled around the country photographing railroad operations. Though the generous cooperation of his family, we can explore with Randy C&NW's train operations in Iowa and Illinois during the 1970s and 1980s. The book includes many photographs of mainline train operations between Cedar Rapids and Clinton, as well as trains running on the West Chicago to Chicago mainline.

Included are Falcon TOFC trains, coal trains, long manifests, and a special section covering commuter trains with E units and F units. There is even a visit to the Oelwein Diesel Shops.

The I&M Rail Link, a significant midwestern regional railroad, spanned over 1,300 miles of track during its operation. With a fleet of 118 locomotives, it managed 29 scheduled trains along with several additional daily services under a haulage agreement with Union Pacific.

The I&M's locomotives were distinguished by their elegant royal blue bodies, white nose stripes, black roofs, and a striking hint of red, reminiscent of its sister road, Montana Rail Link. This railroad was active for just over five years, from April 1997 to July 2002, before its acquisition by Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern, which subsequently rebranded it as Iowa, Chicago & Eastern.

Notable Iowa native photographer Randy J. Williams expertly documented the I&M's operations during this period through his exceptional photography. This book features an impressive collection of over 140 color photographs, showcasing nearly every engine type in dynamic action scenes.

It also includes a curated selection of 16 prime roster photos to further enhance its visual appeal. Additional content encompasses a comprehensive roster list, train schedules, a detailed train activity map, and a mile-by-mile listing of all points across the I&M Rail Link’s six subdivisions.

The I&M Rail Link was recognized as a 'Midwest Powerhouse' by Trains Magazine on the cover of their September 2000 issue. Today, this vital trackage serves as a crucial link connecting Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern in the merger that formed CPKC.

I would guess this title is about 50/50 between older paint schemes and locomotive models than vs. newer BNSF paint and power. Also it is about a 50/50 mix where one photo fills the page and two photos per page is the layout. Photo quality is pretty good and printed on quality glossy paper.

Between 1987 and 2014 Kurt Reisweber took 5 trips to California where he captured many images of the California railroad scene. This book is a collection of those photos, supplemented with photos taken by his father, Bob Reisweber. This is by no means a comprehensive look at the Santa Fe and BNSF but provides a fascinating glimpse of this period of railroading.

Follow Santa Fe diesels in the "War Bonnet" paint scheme and BNSF locomotives as they cross the state from Barstow, to Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. From remote desert locations to more famous ones, including Cajon Pass, Tehachapi Loop and Feather River Canyon, this book provides a look at the Santa Fe and the BNSF during this transition era.
