5 x 11 in., Color Photo section, roster, plans and charts. During the twentieth century, the Union Pacific Railroad gained worldwide renown for the development and operation of high output locomotives powered by steam, gas-electric, and the internal combustion engine. What is less commonly known is that the railroad embraced the internal combustion engine shortly after the turn of the century, just 36 years after the driving of the Golden Spike in the form of the gasoline-powered passenger motor car.
Although overshadowed by later advancements, the passenger motor car, of which many design elements would later be adapted to the railroad's famous Streamliners, were the inaugural application of internal combustion technology on the Union Pacific. The culmination of decades of research, this liberally illustrated volume seeks to tell the definitive story of these unique entries to Union Pacific's nationwide fleet.

Union Pacific Historical Society, Cloth hardcover with dust jacket, 320 pages, Color and B&W photographs and illustrations.
Published 2020. The Camas Prairie: Idaho's Panhandle Railroad is a history of the spectacular Camas Prairie Railroad in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Formed out of the intense competition between the Northern Pacific Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad in 1909, the Camas Prairie operated joint trackage between Riparia, Washington, and Lewiston, Idaho, with branches extending to Headquarters, Stites, and Grangeville, Idaho.
The railroad became known for its many spectacular timber bridges, including the famous Halfmoon bridge in Lapwai Canyon. Carefully researched from railroad papers and interviews with employees, this is the story of the Camas Prairie Railroad from founding to present-day. Chapters cover surveying and constructing the line to the railroad's namesake prairie, the relationship with the railroad's largest shipper, Potlatch Forests, Inc., the evolving operations of each of the railroad's four subdivisions as the company adapted to stay viable, the railroad's equipment, including locomotives, cabooses, and other rolling stock leased from its parent companies Union Pacific and Northern Pacific, and the post-1998 short line era.
The book also discusses freight and passenger connections to the parent roads. From the beginning, photographers were drawn to the railroad due to the many spectacular bridges built to handle the steep terrain. Photographs in the book span from the early construction era to the 2000s and include the work of well-known photographers: Henry R.
Griffiths, Jr., Dr. Philip R. Hastings, Philip C. Johnson, Blair Kooistra, Rob Leachman, and many others! With multiple maps and over 350 illustrations and photographs, many in color, this 320-page hardcover book will be of great interest to both Union Pacific and Northern Pacific historians alike, as well as anyone interested in Pacific Northwest history.
The Union Pacific Historical Society and Don Strack are proud to announce that they have collaborated to republish Dons Ogden Rails book of 1977 in a new and considerably expanded, redesigned format. Compared to the original 96-page vertical format, softcover book, the new edition is a 172 pp., hardcover in a 11 x 8.5 horizontal format.
It contains 217 photographs, with 75 in color, along with 24 maps, including a double-page full color map of the Ogden facilities in 1969. Ogden Rails is the history of the railroads in Ogden, Utah from 1869 to today. It starts with the early Union Pacific and associated feeder railroads, the Utah Central, Utah Northern, and Oregon Short Line.
The Central Pacific and Southern Pacific are covered as well as the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Ogden Union Railway & Depot Company. Union Pacific coverage continues through the mergers to current day activities. Coverage is also included of the electric and interurban railroads, The Bamberger and Utah Idaho Central, until their shut down following World War II.
The Utah State Railroad Museum at Ogden Union Station is also presented in photographs and text. Chapters: Introduction, pp. 7–10; Ch. 1: The Transcontinental Railroad, pp. 11–20; Ch. 2: Union Pacific Expansion, pp. 21–30; Ch. 3: Denver & Rio Grande Western, pp. 31–36; Ch. 4: The Ogden Union Railway & Depot Co., pp.

This excellent book on Union Pacific cabooses is a must-have for Union Pacific fans and caboose fans. Beginning with the earliest cabooses on the UP, wooden 4-window cupola-less cars, to the steel slogan-bearing cars used until the common demise of the use of cabooses in the 1980s, and to the second-hand cars acquired with the demise of the Rock Island and the various mergers, its all here! Diagrams, line-drawings, painting specifications and rosters together with the numerous black and white and Color photographs give the rail enthusiast and model railroader all the information one needs to learn about and model UP cabooses.
With help from many sources including Union Pacific department records and the Union Pacific Historical Society this is a complete work. Also included with the rosters are notes on the disposition of many cars and their locations.
