Description
Amtrak's newest long-distance diesel, the Siemens ALC-42 Charger, in Phase VI colors as #305 โ with TCS WOWSound on board.
The Prototype
The ALC-42 ("Air Liquid Cooled, 4,200 hp") is Siemens' long-distance version of the SC-44 Charger. It was built at Siemens' plant in Sacramento, California to replace Amtrak's aging P42 Genesis fleet. The ALC-42 adds a new nose profile and cab door arrangement for cross-country service.
The first units entered revenue service in 2022 on the Empire Builder. ALC-42s now lead trains across the West, including the Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited through Arizona. They wear Amtrak's Phase VI livery, which debuted on the Chargers.
