Trackside in Search of Virginia and West Virginia Steam with August Thieme (Trackside #93)

While this book has a small taste of big mainline steam, it is devoted to those steam locomotive railroads in Virginia and West Virginia that continued to operate in the 1950s, well after most other railroads had replaced steam locomotives with diesel-powered locomotives. Photographer Thieme gave special emphasis to logging railroad operations which are illustrated in colorful detail.

The largest number of photographs are from the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line (7 pages), US Army at Fort Eustis (5 pages), E. J. Lavino & Co. (4 pages), Virginian (2 pages), Norfolk & Western (10 pages), Elk River Coal and Lumber (12 pages), Buffalo Creek & Gauley (10 pages), W. M. Ritter Lumber Co. (10 pages), Georgia-Pacific (6 pages) and Ely-Thomas Lumber Co. (8 pages).
