This book is based on the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 215, and AAR Manuals applicable to trainyard inspections i.e. Rules of Interchange and the loading of freight cars. It includes the general areas an inspector should be considering when inspecting a car. Visual pictures of wheel defects; an explanation of the defect; gages used in measuring wheel defects, with pictures showing their application, provides a good basis for wheel inspection. What to look for when inspecting roller bearings, axles, couplers, side frames and bolsters is also discussed. Various types of hitches with a list of their inspection points are shown. Brake systems and bad order tags are included. Safety is emphasized throughout the manual as a proper part of the job.
