Much has been written about the Southern Pacific Railroad. A focus of wealth, power and political control in the Golden State, Southern Pacific was on the scene, close behind the Spanish, molding and shaping the California we know today.

And nowhere is this more evident than in the San Joaquin Valley. Pioneer Central Pacific entered the valley building south out of Lathrop in the fall of 1870, reaching Tipton in the very heart of the San Joaquin Valley in late July 1872. At this point Southern Pacific continued the work. Surmounting the Tehachapi mountains, the railroad forked with one line heading to The Needles on the Colorado River, and the other to Los Angeles, which was opened for traffic in 1876.

Along the way, the railroad founded and platted many of the cities that exist today. For instance, Fresno was surveyed and staked out in May 1872 in an area where there was no habitation and "the ground was like a graveled school yard." Accumulating vast land grants in the progress, SP had land to sell and built branch lines to new and promising areas promoting the potential profits to be made to eastern farmers.

At its zenith, prior to World War II, the San Joaquin Division encompassed a little over 876 miles of first main track. This volume covers the rise and fall of this great enterprise, from its initial construction to its expansion, and sadly, its decline through 1996. While including new information, and many unpublished photographs in the mountains, it also covers in depth the vast network of secondary and branch lines once a part of the division.

The Ghost Trains of SP's Overland Route, Train Nos 21-22 – Second Section
By Randall E. Cape and Robert G. McKeen

Overshadowed on the Overland Route by the rest of Southern Pacific's passenger fleet, Nos. 21 and 22, Mail, ran between Oakland and Ogden from 1947 to 1967. Operated primarily for the United States Post Office Department and the Railway Express Agency rather than passengers, these workhorse trains conveyed vast amounts of head end traffic, quietly, efficiently - and very profitably. The Ghost Trains of SP's Overland Route provides a comprehensive review of the history, operations and makeup of these little-known trains. The book takes readers "on board" and describes activities in all of the working areas of the train - from the engine cab to the rear rider car, and everything in between.

This expanded second edition adds to the prior edition's presentation with new images, many in color, and related documents that have become available, helping fill out the story of Train Nos. 21 and 22. This Second Section - Westward takes readers on a photographic journey headed from Ogden to Oakland. Along the way, it provides new insights as it covers the trains, locations they frequented, and operations along the route. Operations at the previously under-examined SP West Oakland Mail Dock and REA Express Oakland Key Point terminal are the subject of special attention in this expanded volume.

Hardcover, 344 pages, quality bound with dust jacket, 560 photographs, 33 maps, 21 tables of data, Bibliography and Index.

While it could be argued that Sacramento, California was the point from which the vast Southern Pacific Railroad System grew, it was San Francisco which became the nucleus of wealth, power and political influence that was to become the Southern Pacific Company. Here the railroad system was planned, financed and managed.

Southern Pacific was one of the first large corporations to make San Francisco its headquarters and was for many years California's largest employer, and largest landowner - except for the federal government - in most of the states it operated in. Underscoring the city's importance, San Francisco was milepost zero in a system that identified the locations of all points on the vast Southern Pacific Railroad west of El Paso, by their distance from San Francisco.

Within the city itself, SP employed thousands of people over the years in its offices, shops, yards and on its trains, streetcars, ferries and steamships. The railroad gave unselfishly to the relief work that followed the earthquake and fire of 1906. Yet it is in San Francisco that we find the origin of the sobriquet, "the Octopus", which appeared in editorials criticizing the company's monopoly of the city's streetcar systems, long before the popular novel of the same name was published.

The opulence of its high-ranking officials added fuel to the fire. San Francisco was the only point on the former Southern Pacific system - or west of the Mississippi for that matter- that has enjoyed daily commuter rail service for nearly 160 years, mostly under SP management. And it was out of San Francisco that the last of the SP mainline steam locomotives operated.

Southern Pacific moved into what would become its final decades of activity in San Francisco with a spirit of optimism and innovation, yet railroad freight operations eventually withered under intense pressure from other forms of transportation, competition from the Port of Oakland, mergers, and the flight of rail-served industry and warehousing from the city in the face of escalating property values.

At this point, Southern Pacific's greatest asst was the critical real estate it controlled in the city, which it attempted to leverage for much-needed cash. Ultimately by 1996, and the merger with Union Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific for all intents and purposes had disappeared from San Francisco entirely.

This then is the story of the rise and fall of this once great corporation in San Francisco in all of its manifestations spanning 132 years, focusing primarily on its rail operations within the San Francisco Terminal.

John Signor is a great author on United States railroad subjects and combined with his illustrator skills, this is a great book to have in your library - all 6+ lbs. of it! This book is filled with so much information on Southern Pacific's Los Angeles Division.

Maps, diagrams of yards, lists of local freights, tonnage diagrams, passenger trains and schedules, through freight times and names, historical B&W photographs, Color photographs of the late steam era up the late 1980s and a short discussion of SP's electrification study and so much more! From the first stirring of a Los Angeles & San Pedro Railroad locomotive in January 1869, to the merger with Union Pacific on September 11, 1996, Southern Pacific's Los Angeles Division in all of its manifestations was an engine of growth and prosperity in Southern California.

It employed many thousands over the years in its offices, shops and trains. It brought settlers west, established towns, brought war workers in and sent the troops home. Much has been written about the Southern Pacific and its subsidiaries in the Southland.

This volume was conceived to augment these works by tracing the long and involved operating history of the Southern Pacific as it first helped to create Southern California, then later adapted to cope with its explosive growth.

Accompanying the text are over 1,000 photographs-most never published, including 456 in color plus timetables and other ephemera, and 76 maps, many of which are rendered in the author's unique "bird's eye view" style.

With Los Angeles as a destination of significance from the beginning, the author has been able to draw from a wealth of historic material on the subject, preserved by the railway itself, official repositories, interested employees and other individuals which includes photographs, firsthand experiences and the day-to-day paperwork that documented how SP operated in Southern California.

Southern Pacific's Los Angeles Division is sure to find a place on the bookshelves of those interested in the SP, or the history of Southern California as a whole.

This is the fourth Volume in a series on Southern Pacific freight cars. It covers box cars, the most numerous type in the SP fleet. The era is roughly from 1865 to 1965. The book contains an extensive array of rosters, photographs and, where possible, drawings of the major car classes, along with other material as available, such as construction photographs, publicity photographs, lettering drawings, and so forth.

Survival of the cars over the years is presented, as are numerous photographs of the cars in service. The first section of the book contains an introductory section of background information, then covers the early box and combination cars, along with fruit, ventilated and refrigerator cars, and presents the important Huntington-era standard cars.

The coverage then turns to the Harriman and post-Harriman designs, and to the World War I era, with several design differences, including USRA cars. The very numerous cars of the 1920s, followed by the all-steel standard designs built before and after World War II are presented in additional chapters.

Separate chapters describe modifications to the various classes, the first of the specially-equipped cars, the last of the 50-ton box cars, and finally the box cars of the 1960s. Box cars, of course, make-up an essential part of the history of any railroad. The book's 846 photographs (36 in color), most from company and museum archives and never before published, together with 92 drawings, extensive rosters, and bibliography, make it unusually complete and authoritative.

This book provides a coverage that every railroad enthusiast, and of course Southern Pacific fans in particular, will enjoy. Noted rail artist John Signor has created for the book the painting shown here, depicting a Southern Pacific yard scene containing the subjects of this series of books. The well-known SP freight car historian Anthony W.

Thompson has authored magazine articles on many SP cars, as well as researching and writing the car section of the book, Pacific Fruit Express, previously published by Signature Press, as well as Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 3 in this series. Volume 4 is now newly revised, and is 8 pages longer. Once again, a strong contribution to the history of the Southern Pacific and of the West has been furnished by Signature Press.

Enthusiasts of those subjects will find this a superb book.

In January 1975, Southern Pacific took delivery of its last General Electric U33C locomotive, considering this model's dismal maintenance record on the SP, observers could reasonably expect never again to see new GE locomotives on this railroad.Just three years later, however, GE came roaring back with their answer to Electro-Motive's GP40-2, the B30-7, and SP was first in line to buy a sample set.

Ultimately, the SP/SSW was to buy 110 B30-7 and another 20 B36-7 locomotives. Slipped in among these high-horsepower units were fifteen B23-7 locomotives delivered in 1980. In 1987-89, 95 new B39 and Dash 8 Techno-Toasters were added to the roster, along with 195 GP60s from GM Locomotive Group. Once a tractive effort railroad, the SP was re-inventing itself as a cross-country intermodal conveyor belt in competition with the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe.At the same time, control of the SP migrated to Rio Grande Industries, then gearing up for a boom in transportation of Colorado-mined coal for power plants.

GE was again able to meet the needs of the combined Rio Grande-SP, first with the comfort cab Dash 9-44CW (direct current) six-axle locomotive and, finally, with the dramatic capstone to the Southern Pacific diesel roster of 279 AC4400CW diesels-delivered in the short span of seven months in 1995. In all, 620 modern General Electric diesel units were delivered to the SP and the Cotton Belt between 1978 and 1995.Their story is told in Volume 19, in 144 pages with 250 photographs.

Each delivery phase of each GE model is given its own chapter. While GE locomotives were not very popular in the resale market, many are documented in the popular Graduates' chapter. Successor Union Pacific had dozens of early former SP B-boats rebuilt to green 21st-Century switchers, as well as converting dozens more into remote-control radio cars.

Their stories are documented in these pages. Making a brief appearance in their own chapter are the three Morrison-Knudsen MK5000 demonstrator locomotives that made a splash in the December 1994 Popular Mechanics magazine, but were banished in disgrace from SP rails after only a few months of unsuccessful tests.Shade Tree Books, softcover, 144 pages, standard portrait book 8 x 10 in., B&W photographs, color covers, roster information.

The railroad depot was once a vital part of local communities as well as essential to railroad operations. And particularly in the West, depots were often landmark structures. Southern Pacific and its predecessor railroads constructed and maintained depots throughout their territory. Between 1877 and 1894 a series of 26 numbered standard plans for depots was developed, and each plan was successively in use for a few years.

By the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 600 SP depots and telegraph offices. By then, many older depots, as well as most new ones at that time, had been or would be built to these standards. This book describes those depots. The story of depots in SP's far-flung territory is an interesting one: when they were built, what they looked like, and when they were destroyed or were saved.

Particularly for smaller communities, the depot was once an integral part of local life, so the life stories of these depots are an integral part of town history. In addition to the 26 numbered standard depot designs, SP also built a number of other de facto standard depots, such as the colonnade style, and several such designs are described here.

Also included are a group of stuccoed depots, modernized from older buildings, as well as standard-design depots built by predecessor railroads, such as the El Paso & Southwestern. Southern Pacific built each depot with an eye to what was expected to be needed. The overall size of the depot often reflected current or anticipated town size.

The agent had quarters upstairs in a two-story depot, essential in places where suitable local housing was not available, but otherwise a one-story depot would be built. Freight rooms were sized according to the expected Volume of business. Well-known depot historian Henry Bender has extensively researched this subject, and presents here an authoritative account of hundreds of SP standard depots, illustrated with a fine collection of photographs.

The jacket painting is by noted railroad artist John R. Signor. Enthusiasts of the Southern Pacific Railroad will find this detailed account of particular value, but fans of other railroads, and local historians throughout the territory of the Southern Pacific, will also find much of interest. The Western Division of the Southern Pacific, historically extending from Sacramento to Oakland and San Jose, and with lines to Fresno, the Napa Valley, and over Altamont Pass, was a crucible of California operations.

Headquartered at the famous Oakland Pier (or Mole) and dispatching hundreds of passenger and freight trains daily in its heyday, this division was in many ways the vortex of SP in the West. With its ferry connection to San Francisco, and train departures to all parts of the SP system, the Oakland Pier was at the center.

The history, construction and operation of the division are presented in this broad compilation by Southern Pacific authority John Signor. As with all his SP historical works, the coverage is thorough and detailed, with many specifics drawn from operating personnel.

At the same time, the outstanding Signor maps we have come to expect, and voluminous photographic illustration from Southern Pacific files as well as from many amateur photographers, enrich the story. Signor has also created an original oil painting for the dust jacket and frontispiece.

In 1959 the Southern Pacific Railroad found itself in need of higher horsepower diesel locomotives to move their increasing freight traffic across the Sierras. As American locomotive manufactures could not meet the SP requirements the company began looking overseas.

In Munich Germany they found that Krauss Maffei, a respected locomotive builder, was producing diesel-hydraulic locomotives rated at 4000 horsepower. Southern Pacific and KM Hydraulics is the story of the building of these locomotives in Germany and of operating them in the United States. Robert J. Zenk working with KM and SP records, first-person accounts and a mechanical study of the sole surviving unit has authored an interesting history of the rise and fall of the hydraulic locomotives on the Southern Pacific.

There are detailed studies of each the 21 SP locomotives, the use of 9010 as the SP camera car and the locomotive's rebirth at the Niles Canyon Railway. This 300-page landscape book contains over 80 drawings, some 300 black/white and color photos many of which have never been published.

This long-awaited book from noted Southern Pacific locomotive authority Bob Church covers all the ten-coupled types, from El Gubernator of the 1880s and the Texas & New Orleans 2-10-0s, to all the 2-10-2s and 4-10-2s. Extensive research has yielded the full details about SP's experiments with valve gear on 2-10-2 number 3769, and equally full details about the design and construction of the three-cylinder locomotives with Gresley valve gear in the SP Class 4-10-2s.

Typical of Church's in-depth information, it has many unpublished photographs, some in color, and includes line profiles, maps, and locomotive/tender plans in its 24 chapters, and also features a chapter on tenders by Arnold Menke. Exhaustive information on history, operations and maintenance is also presented.

No SP fan should be without this book. Signature Press, hardcover with jacket, 534 pages, 795 B&W and color photographs, maps and graphics, bibliography, index.

This is a pictorial with over 400 roster and action photographs of SP Pacific Lines steam during World War II and the dozen years afterward as the roster declined. Almost all of the pictures show engines at work or at least ready to run.

There is a condensed roster and some text, but the main effort was to present caption information that would explain what is going on in the picture - not just what and when, but why. Photographic examples are included of almost every class of Pacific Lines steam engine that operated in this time span, with chapters on each wheel arrangement.

Many of the images were made from negatives that are sixty or even seventy years old, and yet the photograph reproduction is quite good.

This title is published by Shade Tree Books but apparently the Southern Pacific Historical and Technical Society is selling the first copies. This is both an historical account with many Black and White photographs and a pictorial with many large Black and White and Color photographs.

All eras of the Southern Pacific are presented in color: steam locomotives, early diesels, later diesels, MetroLink, and Consolidated Rock Products which is part of the Other Railroads in the Valley chapter.

There are some track diagrams, depot plans (though very small, each one fills a page), and tables of customers and other data. Overall this is a very detailed work. Located north of the Los Angeles basin, the San Fernando Valley was home to a portion of both the San Joaquin main line and the Coast main line, and the entire Burbank Branch.

The author traces the history of Southern Pacific in the area from the 1850s when it just an idea, the construction of both main lines and the branch line, the operational history of the railroad, and the end of the Southern Pacific in 1996.

Iconic locations such as Glendale station, Burbank Junction, and the three tunnels in Chatsworth through Santa Susana Pass were the stomping grounds of both famous and unknown photographers. Many of the photographs are published for the first time.

The steam era covers little 4-4-0s to massive cab-forwards. The diesel era covers the freight and passenger locomotives that dieselized the railroad to the end of the Southern Pacific with SD70Ms and AC4400s.

One chapter is dedicated to other railroads in the valley including Amtrak, Metrolink, quarry railroads and two monorails. Included are thirty-two pages of full-color photography from Daylight locomotives to the last days of scarlet and gray.

White River Productions, hardcover with jacket, Color photography.

Southern Pacific Western Division is an all-color pictorial covering the operations of the Southern Pacific Railroad in northern and central California, from Sacramento to the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, north to Eureka and south to San Luis Obispo.

Seven chapters present stunning color photography of the diverse geography of this part of the Golden State, from redwood forests to open farmland to scenic bay side and ocean vistas to busy urban centers.

While emphasis is on operations in the 1960 through 1990-time frame, Southern Pacific Western Division includes many historic photos from the 1940s and '50s as well, some of which have not previously been published.

It's all here: The multitude of fabulous paint schemes that SP used in the steam-diesel transition era, including Daylight, Black Widow, Tiger Stripes, and Scarlet and Gray, plus several experimental and special patriotic paint schemes.

Many of the named passenger trains, such as the Lark, the Owl, the Cascades, the Coast, Noon, San Joaquin and Shasta Daylights, the Redwood, the Senator and even the maid-of-all-work Tehachapi are covered, as well as the coast mail trains, the Peninsula commutes and early Amtrak.

SP's diverse steam motive power is presented, with Consolidations, Mountains, GS-Class and of course the big Cab Ahead Articulated Consolidations featured. Diesels from EMD, GE, Alco, Fairbanks Morse, and the German builder Krauss-Maffei are shown in a variety of first, second, and third generation cab and hood configurations.

Salient aspects of the histories of the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific are discussed in the chapter introductions and many informative photo captions, and day-to-day freight operations are presented in detail, referencing employee timetables as appropriate.

The work has been reviewed by career Southern Pacific employees whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. Although the Southern Pacific is gone, having been merged into the giant Union Pacific, the railroad lives on through these photographs, and the reader will come away with an appreciation for this once mightiest of western roads.

Between 1947 and 1959, dieselization on the Southern Pacific followed a predictable pattern. Order locomotives from the diesel builders similar to the other builder's early diesels but easier to maintain.Competition from the Santa Fe and truckers caused a re-thinking of this pattern. The SP needed to move trains quickly or be left out of the high-speed high-value end of freight transportation.

Thus the jump into turbo-charged locomotives offered by both EMD and GE.

From it's beginnings in 1904 until abandonment of most trackage in 1992, the Visalia Electric Railroad had a fascinating history. Built as an electric line which pioneered 15-cycle alternating current in the United States, it operated orange interurban cars along its 30-mile route until 1924.

Serving the Sierra Nevada foothill region of eastern Tulare County, the VE became a local fixture as towns and agriculture developed. From the outset in 1904, the Visalia Electric Railroad had all its stock owned by the Southern Pacific.

Primarily serving the growing areas east of Exeter, branches extended eastward toward Sequoia National Park, and southward to Strathmore. After Passenger Service ended in 1924, electric freight operations continued until 1944.

Thereafter, diesels provided service, from GE 44-tonners to handed-down SP ALCO and EMD switchers. Loss of perishable traffic finally doomed the line, and the last significant trackage was abandoned in 1992.

In its heyday, the VE carried out a variety of operations, all described in this Volume, from passenger excursions and commuting, to electric and gas-electric freight service to numerous packing sheds along the line.

Though owned by Southern Pacific, many aspects of operations were locally controlled until 1964. Ownership of locomotives, motor cars, cabooses, and other rolling stock is all presented here, in photographs and rosters.

Some 249 photographs, most previously unpublished, and 15 maps, enrich the book. Phil Kauke has worked many years assembling information and collecting photographs to create this history. That it is now appearing will gratify not only electric traction fans, but also enthusiasts of the Southern Pacific, as this small but vital part of the system was quite interesting in its own right.

Every rail-fan who ever saw a photograph of a 44-ton locomotive lettered Visalia Electric understands that interest. Table of Contents: Introduction, 1. Early Railroad Developments, 2.

SP Modelers, this book is for you! There are many illustrations in color to get your models as accurate as they can be. This guide has been designed as a companion to the Southern Pacific Painting and Lettering Guide for locomotive and passenger cars published by the SPH&TS in 2013.

This title illustrates how Southern Pacific (and subsidiaries) owned freight cars were painted and lettered over the years, as well as Pacific Motor Trucking equipment used in TOFC (Trailer-on-Flatcar) service and rail cars from wholly-owned rail car leasing companies Evergreen and Golden West.

Extensive coverage of painting and lettering practices for Pacific Fruit Express equipment is also included. Coverage begins with the emergence of Common Standard practices in the 1880s (1906 for PFE) and continues through 1996.

All information in this volume is based on official SP and Pacific Fruit Express, car and locomotive builder documents, plans and drawings. This book will be useful as a tool for historians and modelers.

The Garbely Publishing Company, wire-bound softcover, 234 pages, 6 x 9 in.

, B&W. The pages of this original mid-century cookbook have been painstakingly scanned and digitally retouched to eliminate fading, staining, and other age issues found in the original. The reader will find dishes that are remarkably similar to modern-day standards, as well as some that are very "of the time." Only a handful of recipes include ingredient lists, and some of the instructions are vague; a certain level of culinary experience and knowledge to fill in these blanks was required before a Southern Pacific employee would even be issued one of these cookbooks.

Most of the recipes are designed for single-portion cooking, which is different from most railroad cookbooks of the era. This book presents the recipes exactly as the Southern Pacific set them forth on paper in 1944, spiral-bound and in a new larger format for ease of use in the kitchen. We hope you enjoy preparing these authentic "Espee" dishes in your own home!

While many segments of the vast Southern Pacific have attracted wide attention over the years, the lines of the SP in Nevada and Utah have remained largely a mystery. The stretch from Sparks, Nevada, to Ogden, Utah, was for many years known as the Salt Lake Division.

This Volume is an attempt to trace the long and colorful history of the Southern Pacific Railroad through Nevada and Utah, starting with the pioneer Central Pacific in the 1860s, and continuing on with the vibrant Harriman years after 1900, through Depression and War, and on into the modern era.

Over the years, terminals and railroad towns were built, and many later faded into history. Engineering and operating challenges were overcome. Throughout, the traffic, trains and people of the Salt Lake Division continued to change, and all left their mark in some way in the shifting sands and wind-blown passes of this lonely land.

This Volume is by noted Southern Pacific authority John Signor. As with all his SP historical works, the coverage is thorough and detailed, with many specifics drawn from operating personnel. Signor has created an original oil painting for the dust jacket and frontispiece, as shown at left.

The San Antonio Division stretches 1,289 miles from Glidden to El Paso, Texas, and southward to the Rio Grande Valley. This territory encompasses the vast expanse of western Texas, the ports of Corpus Christi and Brownsville, the rich agricultural lands of southern Texas and the urban centers of San Antonio and El Paso.

While focusing on the final four decades prior to Southern Pacific's merger with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1996, Southern Pacific's San Antonio Division: 1960-1996 also contains detailed history of the companies and lines constituting the San Antonio Division.

For continuity, the small portions which constituted the Austin and the Houston Division in 1960 have been included. The author worked in SP's Operating Department from 1979 until 1994 and was granted access to company files, records and internal memoranda.

This book is a very detailed and well researched insight into the operation of the San Antonio Division. Included are 480 photographs, many depicted in full page size, 25 maps and 24 detailed yard and terminal diagrams.

This is the first comprehensive book published on the San Antonio Division and will appeal to anyone interested in the history and operations of the Southern Pacific. Two future companion volumes are planned, the first covering the Dallas and Austin Divisions, the second covering the Houston and Lafayette Divisions.

Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society, 600 pages, 11 x 8? X 2 in., library bound with dust jacket, 480 photographs, 25 maps, 24 yard and terminal diagrams.

Mountain railroading in Southern California has always been synonymous with names like Tehachapi, Cajon Pass and Beaumont Hill. While the two former passes have been the subject of several published histories, Beaumont Hill, Southern Pacific's gateway to Southern California, from the east, has been largely overlooked.

The publication of this book fills that void. After years of exhaustive research, John R. Signor presents the full story of over a century of history and operations at Beaumont Hill. From its fragile beginnings in the 1870's up to today's heavy double-stack traffic, every facet of Beaumont Hill's long and colorful history has been explored.

In the early days, learn about the desperate search for water to satisfy thirsty locomotives, of flashfloods and sandstorms, and how the blistering heat affected day-to-day operations. Trace the evolution of motive power from the diminutive American and Consolidation-type engines of the late nineteenth century through today's high-tech diesels.

Follow the rise and decline of such name trains as the Sunset Limited, the Golden State Limited, the Argonaut, and the Imperial. Get the inside scoop on management decisions concerning double-tracking, signal systems, Centralized Traffic Control, and electrification. Beaumont Hill: Southern Pacific's Southern California Gateway takes you trackside to witness the pageant of over a century of train operations.

See multi-engined freights charge upgrade, first, with the sturdy Consolidations of the early 1900's, followed by the mighty cab-forward Mallets of the late steam era and finally on into the diesel age. See Kaiser ore trains struggle upgrade with 20 locomotives, alone. See the ponderous beet drags moving west from the Imperial Valley, and streamliners of another era-in black and white and in color.

Not to be overlooked are the more pastoral activities of the branch lines radiating out of Colton (including Pacific Electric's electrified operations), and the agricultural oriented operations in the Imperial Valley and along the Inter-California Railway. Crisp maps detail the activities of places like Beaumont, Colton and Indio at their zenith, be it in the 1910s or the late 1940s.

Golden West Books, hardcover with jacket, 174 pages, 8.5 x 11 x 1 in., more than 265 illustrations, 12 color plates, 8 maps drawn especially for this book, timetable reproductions, a profile of the line from Yuma, Arizona to Los Angeles. Two color paintings by John R. Signor.

Hardcover, 256 pages, 8.5 x 11 in., 99% Color photography, captions are longer than most picture books.

There is a lot of Scarlet and Gray in this title, but also short lines, Amtrak, and experimental power liven up the photograph collection. Cabooses, timber trestles, scenic vistas and a mix of older and newer diesels plus a few steam photographs of Cab-forwards and AC-9s make for a good selection of photographs.

The photograph collection presented here is from the 1950s to 1996 before the purchase of the Southern Pacific by the Union Pacific. The previously unpublished photographs of David Houston, Greg Brown and Todd Montgomery are proudly presented in large format, just as they were photographed.

We cover Portland to Dunsmuir, branch lines, the Siskiyou, the Modoc and a chapter on the Oregon, California & Eastern.
