In 1958 the Southern Pacific abandoned its Black Widow freight livery and colorful Daylight passenger livery in favor of a more economical paint scheme of Lark gray and scarlet for all power. Coinciding within a few months of the image change was the end of the first-generation of dieseldom, even though that particular phrase had not yet been coined.
The first diesels to also be delivered in the new livery were also SPs first low-nose hood units. The book picks up the story of SPs diesel power where Southern Pacific in Color Volume 2 left off.

The early photographs in this book date to the 1940s and 1950s, a time of profound transformations in American society, a time witness to economic depression, war, and emergence into relative prosperity. For the Railfan, it was perhaps the best of times and worst of times. Old steam was passing away making way for new diesel.
Diversity was commonplace with 5 major diesel locomotive builders offering different looking and different sounding products. The B&O participated in this diversity and flux until 40 years after the end of WWII, the B&O disappeared into the CSX amalgam. The photographs in this Volume help illuminate what was unfortunately the regress of the nation's first railroad.

Southern Pacific began to take Color photographs relatively early. This book contains a large series of images from both 1939 and 1941 when amateur color photography was scarcely possible. The road chose to depict new equipment, trains and services as well as to illustrate current operations for advertising or corporate use.
This book then, should be seen as a cross-section not only of the Southern Pacific as it was, but also as the company wished it to be seen.
