This title details the history of the 4-8-0 steam locomotives owned by the Southern Pacific. The SP rostered 84 engines in several classes and the various changes to them are documented throughout the book. Illustrating the text are numerous unpublished photos from the cameras of noted railroad photographers H.L. Arey and H.H Arey as well as Robert McFarland, Bert Ward, Gerald Best and others.

A chapter on tenders by Arnold S. Menke and a comprehensive roster is included, along with engine diagrams, division assignments and engine dispositions.
