Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México, better known as N de M, was Mexico's state-owned railway system, running from 1903 until the railways were privatized around 2001. During World War II, the U.S. Railway Mission to Mexico helped rebuild the system and train its crews in American practices. By war's end the N de M had one of the more modern freight car fleets in North America, built to the same AAR standards as cars in the United States.

That standardization meant N de M boxcars traveled freely in interchange. They were a regular sight in U.S. freight trains, arriving through border gateways like Laredo and Eagle Pass, Texas. Adding one to a southwestern, Texas or transcontinental layout is a simple way to show traffic from south of the border.

About the Prototype

After World War II, railroads ordered large numbers of 50' AAR boxcars built to a standard design first widely used in the late 1940s. It was based on the original 1937 AAR design, updated with improved Dreadnaught ends and a diagonal-panel roof. These 50' boxcars were common on North American railroads well into the 1970s and 1980s, making this car a good fit for transition-era through late-1980s layouts.
