Burlington Northern Through Passenger Service In Color

George Strombeck is an inveterate train rider. Share his on-board as well as track side experiences on the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (no SP&S).

As the Hill Lines merged into Burlington Northern, George was there to capture this brief moment in private American passenger train operation and followed it into early Amtrak.

The title of the book doesn't match very well what is inside. Most of the book is pictures of the trains of the predecessors of the Burlington Northern beginning in 1961. Instead of seeing mixed passenger train consists, the first 73 pages are of the trains before the BN merger.

Matched equipment is the rule and not until much later in the book in the Amtrak section will the mixed consists appear. George Strombeck made a point of riding the obscure trains also. So scenes of the locals to Billings, Montana on the Burlington and The Dakotan on the Great Northern are presented.
