Prototype History

The MUmP54 (Multiple Unit motor Passenger car, 54 feet) is one of the most iconic electric multiple-unit cars ever operated on the northeastern railroads. Originally built for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1910 and continuing through the 1930s, these sturdy cars served commuters for decades across the PRR's electrified territory. Many examples were later inherited by Penn Central and eventually found their way into service with the Long Island Rail Road and SEPTA into the early 1970s, making them a staple of the East Coast commuter rail scene.

The Long Island Rail Road operated MUmP54 cars in the classic Tichy Scheme — a striking paint arrangement with a distinctive white window stripe that became synonymous with LIRR commuter service. Car #1505 represents this historical livery in faithful HO scale detail.
