The Prototype

General Motors built the Aerotrain in 1955 as its vision of the future of passenger rail: a low-slung, jet-age streamliner whose coaches were built from GM intercity bus bodies. Union Pacific put it to work in 1956 on the City of Las Vegas between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Its service life was short, but its styling made it one of the most recognizable trains ever built, and a favorite with modelers.
