This Volume on the history of the Denver Tramway highlights the four interurban lines that operate out of the city. The Midland Division is the label the New Haven Railroad applied to what had been the eastern end of the New England Railroad. This book is a black & white photographic tour of the trains, locomotives and stations along this part of the New Haven.

This is a very reasonable price for a monumental work on the early days of the Pacific Electric. The development of southern California into a great urban area went hand-in-hand with the construction and operation of the Pacific Electric.

The book talks about Collis and Henry Huntington building their empire into Southern California and focuses on the 1870s through the Great Merger of 1911. A great reference book for all railroad historians

Henry Edward Huntington's impact on the public transportation system of Southern California was far reaching. His Pacific Electric red interurban went everywhere. That is except for the western portions of Los Angeles county where Moses Sherman's and E.

P. Clark's 180-mile Los Angeles Pacific Railroad dominated. By 1903, Huntington and the Southern Pacific controlled by Edward H.

Harriman had become partners in the Pacific Electric. During March 1906, Harriman negotiated with Sherman and Clark, for control of their railway. In the meantime Huntington operating on his own acquired the narrow-gauge Los Angeles and Redondo Railway.

It had 89 miles of track, including 3 lines to Redondo Beach. Harriman always had in his mind the merging of the Pacific Electric with the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, thus forming a huge interurban empire.

R.S. Lovett, Harriman's successor at Southern Pacific negotiated the sale of Huntington's interest in Pacific Electric to Southern Pacific by November of 1910 for an undisclosed sum. Once the Southern Pacific had control of the Pacific Electric, the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad was merged into the Pacific Electric, thus becoming the Western Division of the Pacific Electric.

The name Santa Fe began with the early history of the Southwest, grew with the flow of commerce that followed the old Santa Fe Trail, and became a popularized term by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

For the past century this name has been associated with a famous fleet of streamlined passenger trains, and today's piggyback and container trains. This is the first of three Volumes featuring the Santa Fe System.

When the Massachusetts towns of Bedford and Billerica clamored for a railroad, George E. Mansfield appeared on the scene and sold them on a new, inexpensive way to build one. He finished the line in 1877 and it was acclaimed around the world as a brilliant new departure in railroad building.

The Billerica and Bedford Railroad delivered everything its promoter said it would but, yet, it failed financially in less than a year. What happened to cause this failure? Using original railroad documents and letters along with newspaper and trade journal articles, the author delves into the behind-the-scenes machinations that plagued this 8? mile line.

The backgrounds of the people involved are explored to determine their goals and motivations. Numerous drawings of the railroad rolling stock and structures are included along with examinations of the technical aspects of line which made it so revolutionary.

George Mansfield went on to build the Sandy River Railroad as well as the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad, both of which survived into the 1930s and beyond. After only six years of railroad building, though, Mansfield seemingly vanished from the railroad scene without building another railroad.

This is the story of the pioneer two-footer which paved the way for the more successful narrow-gauge lines built in Maine and other locations around the country. It is also the story of the promoter of the Mansfield System of two-foot gauge railroads, who he was, where he came from and what happened to him and his dreams.

The focus of this book is on the steam locomotive classes of the Delaware & Hudson that were in common operation during the late 1930s and 1940s. During this time, the D&H went from a coal hauler to a bridge carrier where train speeds were important for connections with other railroads. By 1950, 233 steam locomotives remained on the roster, 182 in freight service, twenty-six in Passenger Service and twenty-five in switching operations.

By 1953, diesel switchers and Road-Switchers had replaced all active steam power. Under Joseph H. Nuelle, ninth president of the D&H, motive power requirements changed. Nuelle ordered from ALCO twenty Challenger 4-6-6-4 locomotives for the bridge traffic. Numbered 1500-1519, they were quickly followed by fifteen, #1520-1534, more in 1942 (page 41).

Under the Nuelle administration, the D&H also ordered fifteen modern dual service 4-8-4s for delivery in 1943 (page 10). These 4-8-4s operated between Oneonta and Rouses Point in either freight or Passenger Service. Rounding out the modern steam locomotive fleet for the D&H were five more 4-6-6-4s, #1535-1539, delivered in 1946 (page 44).

This book does not cover all classes of D&H steam power but is a sampling of the various classes. From 0-6-0 switchers to the 4-6-6-4s 18 classes and sub-classes of D&H steam power is presented.
