Rio Grande: A Last Look Back 1974-2010. The independent Rio Grande Railroad, a spirited railroad with incredible pride, managed to cut a fine niche for itself as a regional and bridge route in the transportation market.

There's lots of D&RGW action in this book at all the familiar places: Tennessee Pass, the Moffat Route, the Utah desert, Ruby Canyon, and other locations, includes more than a dozen track charts and maps that will bring the Rio Grande to life.

A great deal of change has occurred in Rio Grande territory over the past 36 years. This nice book features the Rio Grande and the changes made to this popular road under Southern Pacific and Union Pacific ownership.

Mallory Hope Ferrell has always been intrigued by the remote, often run-down and obscure railroads. A Southerner by birth, this tome covers many of these lines during the period just before World War II until the arrival of a diesel salesman or abandonment put an end to that glorious era of steam and smoke.

The Bible Belt is generally accepted as covering a sweeping, wide arc of the southeastern United States, extending from West (By Damn) Virginia to East (By God) Texas. It was in this territory that small steam powered lines lasted so long and so well.

Many of these lines served a single industry, mine, quarry, cotton mill, town or sawmill. When this local industry failed, or the lumber and coal played out, these carriers simply up and quit! The few survivors opted for small diesel power, others were absorbed as a branch of a larger railroad, but most were abandoned in favor of highway transportation - or no transportation at all.

This book looks at the PRR steam locomotive classes operating during the 1940s and 1950s. Our color photograph trip starts in the Windy City of Chicago and moves over the fast Fort Wayne Line. At Pittsburgh, we stop to visit two steam short lines related to the PRR, the Western Allegheny and the Ligonier Valley, and then move on to the mountain city of Altoona.

From Altoona to Harrisburg, the multi-track mainline had a plentiful supply of steam and diesel-powered trains. Side trips to Sandusky, Sodus Point and Shamokin give us the opportunity to view large Pennsy steam power hauling coal and ore trains. The photographic trip finally ends in Camden, New Jersey, where steam remained in force until 1957 mixed with Baldwin diesels and several oil-electric cars.

In this book we will take a look at the New Haven's Electric Locomotive and multiple unit cars. New Haven was the pioneer of main line AC electrification in the United States. Due to the New York State Act of 1903, steam locomotives would be banned in Grand Central Terminal and the Park Avenue Tunnel by July 1, 1908.

New Haven's experience with DC was that it was only good for light traction. So, in order to operate over its own lines and into Grand Central, the New Haven would have to operate on both a 650 volt DC third rail and 11,000 volt AC overhead wire, a formidable challenge for 1905-1907. This four track mainline electrification would be expanded to New Haven, Conn. by 1914, Cedar Hill Yard by 1915 and over the Hell Gate Bridge route by 1917.

There never lived an ALCO Diesel that liked to stay tuned up, so goes the old saying. The RS-series, with its husky 244 or 251 engine idling, makes sounds befitting a fire-breathing dragon. Notched-out, it rattles and thumps, exuding dark, oily smoke as turbo blades try to catch up with combustion chambers.

Colorado Railroad Water Tanks is a historical tour of the water tanks of Colorado's steam railroad era. Steam locomotives required a large quantity of water to generate the required amount of steam for motive power.

Colorado railroads operated over six hundred tanks located along the approximately 6,000 miles of track. The six hundred tanks and their locations are listed in an index and documented with construction dates, sizes, water sources and pumping equipment, when the information is available.

The process and history of bringing water from its source to the locomotive's tender is explained and illustrated. Included are 289 pages with over 260 color and black & white photographs (about 95% B&W), maps and illustrations of tanks and water equipment! Drawings, illustrations, maps and photographs in digital form are also included on a CD.

Tanks that still remain are listed and located with GPS data for those wishing to visit these reminders of Colorado's railroad past.
